Meganisi is an island of just 20 km² and 1,200 inhabitants.
Homer informs us that Ulysses, before leaving for the Trojan war, entrusted his ships to King Mentora who ruled the island called Tafion, a name perhaps derived from the mythical son of Poseidon.
Meganisi features a coastline carved by deep fjord-like bays. In its southern appendix there are numerous caves among which the most famous are those of Papanikolì, about 30 meters deep and with a tiny beach at their entrance. The caves are only accessible by boat. The three villages of Meganisi are just a handful of houses, often made of stone, overlooking very narrow alleys. There are many windmills today scattered almost everywhere.
Meganisi's tourist fortunes are due to the fact that it is within easy reach of the island of Skorpios owned by Aristotle Onasis where he and his then wife Jaqueline Kennedy used to spend long holidays.
