Messel Pit

Messel Pit: View from the vantage point into the pit

The Messel Pit, the former open-cast mine, in which oil shale was extracted and which has become world-famous for the fossils from the Eocene that were found here, is located approx. 2 km south of the village. After the end of the dismantling, the large hole was to serve as a garbage dump. The plans could be prevented at the last minute. The mine has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
