Micronesia is one of the three major island groups in the Pacific or Pacific Ocean that together Oceania forms. The area is enclosed by the Philippines in the West, Indonesia in the southwest, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia in the south and Polynesia to the southeast and east.
The word Micronesia comes from the ancient Greek words μικρος (small) and νησος (island).
