Middelburg is a city in Cultural Heartland in the northwest of the region Mpumalanga.
background
The city was named in 1864 Nazareth founded. It was renamed Middelburg as early as 1872. It gained notoriety during the Boer Wars after 1,381 women and children died in a British concentration camp.
Modern Middelburg is characterized by the steel industry, it is known as the "Stainless Steel Capital of Africa". From an administrative point of view, Middelburg belongs to Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.
