Story
Mingrelia is a former province of the great kingdom of Imerethia bordered by the Black Sea to the west and bordering to the northwest of Abkhazia, Svanetia to the north, Imerethia proper to the east and la Gourie to the south.
Mingrelia covers the ancient kingdom of Colchis and the High Middle Ages successor state of Egrissi. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, Mingrelia was included in the unitary kingdom of Georgia. When the latter was dissolved, it provisionally followed the fate of the kingdom of western Georgia under Alexander II of Imerethia before acquiring de facto and then de jure independence.
Since its origin, Mingrelia has been ruled by a dynasty of feudal lords, the Dadians, with the title of "Duke of Bedia, Egrissi and Odichi" from the beginning of the 13th century and then independent princes from 1491. After the extinction of the first line of Dadian in 1691, power is exercised by a second line called the "Dadian Tchikovani".
General Paul Tsitsianov obtains the that the Dadian Grigol (1793-1804) put himself under the protection of the Russian Empire1. On the latter's death, he imposed his 14-year-old son Léon V as the new Dadian (1804-1846) to the detriment of his uncle Manutchar. The principality was annexed de facto during the creation on from a post of governor of Mingrélie by General Alexandre Bariatinski, governor general of the Caucasus, then de jure in 1867 when it was attached to the governor of Kutaisi, Kolubakine2.
