The 16 Plitvice Lakes, about 100 km southeast of Rijeka are located in steps one above the other and are connected by approx. 90 waterfalls. They are a unique natural spectacle that owes its creation to the karst landscape. The twelve upper lakes lie in a dolomite depression and are surrounded by thick beech forests.
The four lower lakes lie between steep rock faces at a significantly lower level. They were created by the collapse of caves through which the water of the upper lakes drained. The gradient between the highest and the lowest lake is about 180 m and the waterfalls are between 3 and 78 m high. A pulpit was built at the best vantage point, from which there is a magnificent view of the roaring basin of the lower lakes. The color of the lakes shimmers in different shades of green and blue, depending on the depth of the water (5 to 46 m). Founded in 1949 Plitvice Lakes National Park with its rich flora and fauna (including bears, wolves, otters, eagles and vultures) is many times larger (19,200 ha) than the actual lake area.
