Meissen - a county town in the south-eastern part German, in the federal state Saxony, in the administrative district of Dresden, seat of the district of Meissen. It is situated on the Elbe, approx. 26 km from Dresden. It is very close to Dresden and the neighboring landscapes of Saxon Switzerland. Meissen was once the home of a local bishop and has a huge medieval cathedral and an adjoining castle. Meissen was also the residence of the princes who later converted to Saxony before they moved to Dresden. It is also the place where the first European porcelain was invented. The factory still produces today and you can visit and experience it. Meissen porcelain (German: Meißner Porzellan) enjoys an excellent reputation and is properly valued.

Characteristic

Drive

By plane

The nearest international airport is in Dresden (DRS). If you are coming from far away, you are more likely to fly to Leipzig-Halle (near Schkeuditz, FUNNEL) because it offers more connections.

By rail

Meißen has three train stations, Meißen, Meißen-Altstadt (old town) and Meißen-Triebischtal, all served by the S-Bahn from Dresden every 30 minutes. Meißen station is located on the eastern bank of the Elbe, across the river from the old town. The best for tourists is the use of the Meißen-Altstadt station. The old town and tourist attractions are within walking distance of the station.

Meissen is part of the VVO Transport Board. Fare zone 50. All VVO tickets, including this zone, can be used on buses, regional trains and (most) ferries.

By car

Meissen Located on the national road No. 6 Dresden-Leipzig and 101 Nossen-Elsterwerda.

By bus

Communication

Walk. The old town of Meissen is not that big but very pretty. However, it is quite steep to Albrechtsburg. The tour bus runs round-trip several times a day, which could be an option if you are lazy or have mobility problems. A few years ago the city of Misnia built an escalator to the upper parts of the city, but due to mechanical failures it was more out of order than it was in use.

Public transport

All information on public transport is available on home page the Upper Elbe Public Transport Authority (VVO). There are three city bus lines (A, B, C), many regional buses and the sightseeing route (E). Here map public transport. The S1 takes you to Dresden in 36 minutes. All lines (except E) are connected to the Busbahnhof (main bus station) Meißen.

Worth seeing

Albrechtsburg Castle
Entrance to the porcelain factory
  • Porcelain factory and museum, Talstraße 9, 49 3521 468-0. A museum dedicated to porcelain that made the city famous.
  • 1 Albrechtsburg. Castle in Meissen.
  • 2 Cathedral of Meissen (Meißner Dom).
  • In addition, it is also worth taking a look at the city itself and its old, beautiful houses.

It's worth doing

Meissen is a rather quiet city and there is not much to do which has nothing to do with either the porcelain or the castle and former residence.

Gastronomy

Perhaps the strangest local specialty is the "Meißner Fummel", a very brittle pastry that tastes basically nothing and mostly air. It was allegedly invented to be transported along with the famous Meissen porcelain to prove that any breakage was not caused by the recklessness of the driver. Some bakeries sell them and you will be sure to be informed about them on any guided city tour. Tasting is often included

Meissen is the easternmost wine region in Germany and at the northeastern edge of viticulture in Europe. Meissen wines are mainly white wines and are, given their location, rather on the dry side. The most common grapes are Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Weißburgunder. Red wines are rather rare. As the wine area is not very large and cannot meet the demand, Meissen wines are rather rare and therefore expensive.
