Moʻynoq is a small town (about 2,000 inhabitants) located about 210 kilometers northwest of Nukusu, the capital of an autonomous republic Karakalpakstan. Even 40 years ago Moʻynoq was one of the largest ports located on the shores of the Aral Sea, unfortunately the city fell into decline due to an ecological disaster - the sea retreated 150 kilometers from the city. The tragedy of the Aral Sea began in the 1960s, when Soviet planners decided to increase cotton production in Central Asia. A large network of irrigation canals was built, fed with the waters of the two largest rivers of Uzbekistan: the Syr Daria and the Amu Daria. From that moment on, the level of the Aral Sea began to decline strongly, over 40 years the sea changed into two separate reservoirs, and the total area decreased by about 2/3 compared to the area of the 1960s. On an area of 50,000 square kilometers, a salt desert called Aralkum.
