Monteux is a city of Vaucluse.

Understand

Like many towns in the Vaucluse department, Monteux was first a stronghold of the Counts of Toulouse and their vassals. the Comtat Venaissin having been attributed to the Pope, in 1274, Bertrand des Baux paid homage for his Montilian fief to the Rector Guillaume de Villaret, who had just appointed Gregory X. Monteux remained in the papal fold, like the whole of the Comtat Venaissin, until the creation of the department of Vaucluse, in 1792. This papal presence is still found today, in the Clémentine Tower, which was one of the homes of Pope Clement V.

The irrigation of the plain of Comtat Venaissin by the Carpentras canal, in the 19th century, and the establishment of the railway, with the line from Sorgues - Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Carpentras allowed Monteux to develop an activity intensive farming linked to market gardening and fruit arboriculture (Carpentras strawberries and Cavaillon melons in particular). This did not prevent an industrial development with the fireworks Ruggieri (pyrotechnics), MGI Coutier (automotive industry) and Ducros (food industry). The pyrotechnic activity is no longer practical nowadays, following several accidents, but the municipality maintains many links with companies in the economic sector, which allows, the last weekend of August, one of the largest fireworks display in France (one hour), which allows Ruggieri to test his latest creations in life size.
