the Walnut Canyon National Monument is a national monument located in Arizona to United States.

Understand

This canyon in the heart of which are curved rock formations allowed the Sinagua tribe to build up a troglodyte habitat that they left in XIIIe century. The shape of the rocks made it possible to add only one wall to obtain a complete habitat and the general configuration of the place ensured effective protection against possible enemies as well as food autonomy thanks to abundant vegetation and the presence of water.

Walnut Canyon National Monument is located east of the town of Flagstaff, along the AZ-622 road.

From I-40 highway, take exit 204, then follow AZ-622 road south.

From the I-17 motorway, head north until the end of the motorway, then take the I-40 motorway eastbound then exit 204 and the AZ-622 road southbound .

Since Flagstaff, it is also possible to take route 66 east. At the end of the road, take the AZ-622 road.

Entrance fee

    1 Island Trail  – This loop trail with a length of 1,5 km allows you to descend to an overhang surrounded by the canyon thanks to 240 steps.     2 Rim Trail  – This easy trail with a length of 1,2 km, partially accessible to people with reduced mobility, allows you to walk along the western side of the canyon. Two points of view are arranged to offer a panoramic sight on the canyon and on the troglodyte habitat which nests there. On the return trip, it is possible to take an alternative path leading to the pueblo and at the pithouse previously described.
