Muara is a city in the sultanate Brunei, it is located at the northeasternmost point of the district Brunei-Muara.
background
The Malay word Muara means estuary or river mouth. The city of Muara or "Pekan Muara" is located on a peninsula, which is surrounded by the South China Sea in the north and the Bay of Brunei in the south. Its tip, once the peninsula Pelumbong Spit, was separated from the mainland by a canal around 1960 to allow access to the port of Muara.
Until around 1850, the region was only very sparsely populated. After the discovery of hard coal, the Brooketon colliery, in the associated port steamships could be supplied with coal. In 1924, however, the mine was shut down for economic reasons.
