To know

Maritime Greenwich

Maritime Greenwich is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and is composed of the Greenwich Park, the University Old Royal Naval College, the House of the Queen of the seventeenth century, theRoyal Observatory and the historic center. This site represents very important examples of the architecture of Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren who were also important for the evolution of European architecture. The Queen's House was the first Palladian building in England, while the Old Naval College is a beautiful example of English Baroque architecture.

In addition to notable architectural examples, World Heritage status recognizes the important role Greenwich Maritime has played in modern history, as it developed into a naval superpower and scientific endeavors. The Royal Observatory has had a very important influence in the history of astronomy and navigation, leading to the creation of the Greenwich Meridian and the Greenwich Meridian Time as world references.

Most of the attractions in Maritime Greenwich are free, except the Observatory, whose hill is worth seeing even if you don't want to enter the museum, to enjoy the view of the city from above.

Greenwich is a maritime district in south east London, about 9km from the city center. Area of great historical importance whose center contains Maritime Greenwich one of the four UNESCO sites in London, famous for its naval history and connections with the Royal Family, as well as being the place from which the prime meridian (longitude 0 °) starts.

The main attractions are in the center, along the riverside, on the western side of the Royal Town Hall of Greenwich, which also includes Eltham and Woolwich. North of the Town Hall is the Greenwich Peninsula, also known as North Greenwich which houses the O2 Arena concert venue. Nearby is the area of Blackheath, very green with large historic houses which, although technically located in Lewisham Town Hall, is easily reached from the center of Greenwich.

Greenwich is a historically important district that hosts many tourist attractions: the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum, the Old Royal Naval College and the Greenwich Observatory. All of these places are often used to promote tourism in London and Old Naval College is often used for filming.

Despite being close to central London and thanks to the large park and the proximity to the river, it feels like it is very far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Very busy, especially in summer when both tourists and Londoners take advantage of the good weather and long days to enjoy the park and walk along the river. Throughout the year, however, the central market attracts visitors with the intent of grabbing souvenirs, local art or a quick meal. Outside the center, the town hall still offers various attractions.

Background

Greenwich has been inhabited since Roman times even though it was only a small fishing village. In the Middle Ages the rulers visited the area to hunt residing in a lodge built specifically since the fourteenth century, under the reign of Edward I. In 1447 the Palace of Placentia was built, surrounded by the Royal Park which was where the Royal is today. Naval College. Of great historical importance, because it was the birthplace of Henry VIII and his two daughters Maria I and Elizabeth I. The palace played a fundamental role in the life of the Tudor monarchs: for Henry VIII it became the main seat in London and was also the place where Elizabeth he planned the campaign against the Spanish army in 1588. The presence of the palace led Greenwich to be chosen as the location to build the Royal Observatory leading to the establishment of Greenwich Mean Time, used as an international reference.

After the civil war the palace fell into disrepair and was demolished with the aim of rebuilding a new grand palace. The reconstruction plans were only partially realized and were eventually incorporated into the construction project for a hospital, the Royal Naval Hospital which later became the Royal Naval College between 1873 and 1998. The university, developments and navigation improvements developed at the Royal Observatory and the secure anchorage position on the river have contributed to the naval heritage of the area. In recognition the National Maritime Museum was opened in 1937 and the famous vessel Cutty Sark was docked in Greenwich, as a museum, in 1954.

During the industrial revolution Greenwich was located in the heart of the London harbor and large areas of Greenwich Town Hall that were located along the river, outside the center, were occupied for industrial use; many factories and warehouses lined the banks of the Thames. These old industrial areas have been redeveloped although in parts of the Greenwich Peninsula there are still many abandoned industrial buildings. Part of this area was then chosen for the construction of the Millennium Dome (today O2 Arena) which hosted great shows for the celebration of the beginning of the third millennium.

During Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, it was announced that Greenwich Town Hall would be gaining Royal Town Hall status, recognizing its historical significance and connection to the royal family. In the same year, Greenwich was one of the areas used for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where basketball and gymnastics competitions were hosted in the O2 Arena, while equestrian competitions and the modern pentathlon were held in the Royal Park.

What see

Prime Meridian

The use of a meridian line to identify where you are in the world and help with navigation dates back to the ancient Greeks, the year 276 BC. In the following millennia, various meridians were used as a reference, as each country had its own. In 1851, Royal Astronomer Sir George Airy instituted a new meridian that passed through the Royal Observatory which was adopted as the prime meridian of Great Britain. Thanks to its strong dominance in world trade, in 1884 about two thirds of ships used it as a reference point on maps and diagrams, leading to it being voted as a world standard at the International Meridian Conference that same year.

From this point the western and eastern hemisphere converge, which means that standing on the line you are on both hemispheres! The brass demarcation mark lying on the ground as a reference for the Prime Meridian is today 102 meters west of the Prime Meridian used by satellites to determine GPS location.

See the Meridian Line for freeIf you don't want to pay to see the meridian line inside the Royal Observatory, there is a silver plaque and markers just outside the lower part of Greenwich Park, at the intersection of Park Vista and Feathers Place.

Meridian Zero in Greenwich

Greenwich city center is home to many tourist attractions. The combination of Greenwich Park, the Royal Observatory, the Queen House and the Royal Naval College make up the Maritime Greenwich, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Outside of this main area, however, there are other attractions throughout the city hall.

Police

La stazione di polizia più vicina al centro urbano di Greenwich e Blackheat si trova a Lewisham ed ha un accoglienza aperta 24 ore.
