Geographical notes

Southwark it was one of the first settlements of the city extended beyond the walls of Square Mile across the river. There are traces since the Roman period. The eastern part of the borough is typically called "London's swimming pool" in reference to the old port and the docks which have now been converted into homes and shops. The description of the north-western part, on the river, can be found in the article concerning the South Bank.

The Crystal Palace it was a huge glass palace designed by Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition, Prince Albert's idea to demonstrate the power of the English empire to the rest of the world. It was erected inside Hyde Park and closed in 1851. Parliament then voted not to keep it there and to move it to the Hill of Sydenham Hill. The surrounding area is still known by many today as Upper Norwood it is officially Crystal Palace. The building then burned down in 1936 and the cause is still unknown today.

Dulwich has several sub-districts including North Dulwich, which borders Herne Hill, Dulwich Village (which is the center of the village which is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery, James Allen's Girls' School and Dulwich College and Dulwich Park) and East Dulwich, which borders Peckham, with its independent shops, restaurants and bars along Lordship Lane.

Lewisham is a large residential borough in south London that encompasses many of the most dilapidated areas in the entire city. The eastern part of this area is the historical one Blackheath, burial area of the victims of the London plague, today ideal for flying kites. Deptford is Surrey Quays are located on the river.

Where stay

How to keep in touch

Useful information

Not appearing on the tube map, this area can be forgotten by tourists even though it has good connections to Charing Cross (for the West End), Cannon Street (for the City of London) and London Bridge Station (for the South Bank. ) so it's a good base for visiting London.

The UNESCO site of Greenwich it is easily accessible by bus or DLR from Lewisham station.

Safety

This was once a working class area. The towns that form Southwark and Lewisham still maintain a decadent image in the eyes of many Londoners. Tourists shouldn't be afraid of this though as the area is generally safer than the rest of South London. That said, some areas should be approached with more caution.

While the activities of small local gangs are not at the level they used to be, some areas like Deptford and Peckham remain prone to gunshot and assault.

Surrey Quay is very quiet even though there have been pickpocketing and theft events.

Southwark Park may be pleasant but it is also known for attracting unwanted people, both at night and during large events.

If you go dancing at the Ministry of Sound you have to be ready to be surrounded by drunken revelers ready to beat.
