South Bank is a district of the city of London.

To know

South Bank (the south bank) is located on the 90 ° bend of the River Thames in the center of the city and is one of its cultural centers. It is a small area but has many creative and artistic places as well as other attractions, shops, restaurants, street food and places to drink. It is very easy to walk around here as the area is not very large and is served by the pedestrian zone called "The Queen's Walk", which is part of the Thames Park and Jubilee Walkway.

Background

Long since South Bank it is associated with artistic activities. In the Middle Ages, thanks to its position just below the City of London but outside its jurisdiction, he made it a center for entertainment for the citizens, offering everything he could spend time having fun, from theater to prostitution (both illegal within the city walls). With the change of habits then this changed and then came back into vogue in more modern times. In 1951 the "Festival of Britain" was held in this area with the intention of giving the nation a sense of post-war renovation and the area was rebuilt on purpose. Most of the buildings in the Southbank Center are from that period and this can be deduced from the Brutalist architecture.

Geographical notes

Further east, along the curve of the river, almost directly below the City, is the area known as Bankside whose name derives from the medieval name Banke syde. The same factors that gave birth to South Bank also gave birth to this area and many medieval theaters were located here, including the Globe by William Shakespeare, now replaced with a copy. The most turbulent area also justified the presence of the Clink prison, one of the oldest in England. Nearby is also located Borough Market found here in its various forms from the 13th century (and probably also in Anglo-Saxon times). Thanks to its location near the main docks, it became one of London's most important food markets and in the 19th century it was known as "the London pantry". Today it maintains a similar position and is very popular with food enthusiasts.

Further east is the area that bears the name of Shad Thames (also known as Butler's Wharf [the butler's quay] e London Bridge City). In contrast to the rest of the area, the history of this part of the city is purely industrial, hosting the largest warehouse complex of the Victorian era. Today, its proximity to the City beyond Tower Bridge makes it popular with white-collar workers and consequently property prices mirror their respective bank accounts. Likewise the prices of restaurants and entertainment venues. One of the most iconic industrial buildings there Bankside Power Station it was renovated in the 1990s and reopened as a museum under the name of Tate Modern which today is more popular than its big sister Tate Britain.

The whole district is walkable distance from Covent Garden, Soho, Westminster and from City of London. It is the perfect place for a relaxing stroll and to watch the world go by. You can enjoy great views of the parliament building, the "Houses of Parliament" and St. Paul's cathedral, especially in the early morning and in the evening after dark. You can see many theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts, films and free events for all ages and needs.

The South Bank Walk

A glimpse of the walk

This walk runs along the River Thames in the heart of London. The route follows the paved path of the riverside, very popular with both tourists and citizens. The official name is "The Queen's Walk" and is part of the longer "Jubilee Walkway". Lamp posts with marine animals are known as "dolphin lamps" even though the animals are actually sturgeons. Designed by the Victorian architect George John Vulliamy although most of them were installed in the late 20th century.

Prepare for the route

A map and a camera are helpful, but no special preparations are needed to tackle the walk.

The walk

The walk can be approached from both east and west directions. Going east to west is generally easier as you end up in central London where you can spend the rest of the day. The entire route goes from Tower Bridge to Lambeth Bridge and can take less than an hour if you walk quickly, a couple of hours at a slower pace, or all day if you stop at various places.

Starting with Tower Bridge, before embarking on the walk, it is worth going east under the arch of the bridge entering the area of Shad Thames, which is a narrow lane with Victorian warehouses on either side with crossing overhead walkways. Today they have been converted into restaurants, offices and apartments.

Heading west from Tower Bridge you will almost immediately pass the glass building of the City Hall, the headquarters of the London Regional Assembly. Continuing along the river you will then pass in front of the ship HMS Belfast, of the British Royal Navy which operated during World War II and is now open to the public. Continuing it is advisable to detach from the river and go through the Hay's Galleria a must-see shopping center on Tooley Street.

On Tooley Street turn right and pass the London Bridge station on the other side of the road. Staying on this road keep right after London Bridge Hospital and walk through an archway under London Bridge. Here, immediately on the right after the bridge is the Glazer's Hall on the right and the Southwark Cathedral on the left.

After passing the cathedral, you can turn left to go inside the market Borough Market and the Old Operating Theater Museum a relic from the days before the antiseptic operations. The Golden Hinde, a scale replica of Sir Francis Drake's galleon, which rests in the "St. Mary Overie Dock", open to the public. Continuing west along Clink Street, parallel to the river, you pass the ruins of the building Winchester Palace, the former residence of the Bishop of Winchester and the museum Clink Prison Museum.

At the end of Clink Street, you will pass under the Cannon Street railway bridge passing in front of Vinopolis, a huge store of wines from all over the world. From here, turn right to meet the river again and pass in front of the pub "The Anchor public house", a good (although very popular) place to have a drink on summer evenings. Continuing along the river after crossing Southwark Bridge you will reach the theater Shakespeare's Globe Theater. Nearby there are also the ruins of the theater Shakespeare's Rose Theater which is located under an office building, although they are not always accessible to the public. Next to the Globe Theater is the home of Sir Christopher Wren which is not open to the public. The view from the house from the pedestrian bridge Millennium Footbridge towards St. Paul's Cathedral.

The pedestrian bridge is located on one side of the Tate Modern. The view from the rooftop restaurant of this museum is said to be one of the most beautiful in the city. Continuing along the river you will pass under the Blackfriars railway bridge. If you look towards the river just after the bridge you will see the columns of the original bridge which was demolished because it was too weak to support modern trains. Continuing instead you pass under the Blackfriars bridge.

A little further along the river you pass the building Oxo Tower which is identified with the leaded glass windows forming the word OXO, installed by the broth cube factory when they were prevented from displaying advertisements on their tower. Since then the building has been restored to be divided into luxury apartments, housing a very expensive restaurant and an art gallery with a great view of the river.

Continuing along the river, you pass Gabriel's Wharf a very pleasant riverside area with a few restaurants and a few shops, especially clothes. The building that follows along the river is that of the studios London Studios, which houses the buildings of Channel 4 and ITV, two televisions that have recorded many shows here. On Saturday mornings, many teenagers gathered on the riverfront in hopes of meeting their musical heroines as guests of the show CD: UK which broadcasts live musical performances. Immediately after, you will find the general district of the IBM to then get to the theater National Theater. The area in front of the theater in the summer is often used for free shows (staging, poetry, etc.).

After the National Theater you pass under the Waterloo Bridge. There is a large second-hand book stall here during the day. Besides the bridge we are next to the Queen Elizabeth Hall a building that hosts many classical, modern and contemporary music concerts and dance performances. It is part of the South Bank Center that even if it is terribly fascinating it is nevertheless a very lively and popular center of the arts. The building complex also houses the Purcell Room gallery and the Hayward which showcase visual arts exhibitions.

The next building along the South Bank is the Royal Festival Hall, a concert hall where mainly classical music is played. During the summer there are free shows and bars open on the balcony overlooking the river.

Soon after you arrive at the Hungerford Bridge, flanked by two pedestrian bridges, the bridges Golden Jubilee Bridge. The view from the east bridge overlooking the east side of the river is fantastic, especially in the evening and is probably the best view of the city skyline open to the public. Continuing to walk then you pass the small park Jubilee Gardens which is located in front of the Shell Center, the headquarters of the oil company. Although the building is not open to the public, its facade may be familiar, as it has been immortalized in many films.

On the west side of the park is the London Eye, which offers a unique view of the city, at a single price; there County Hall which now houses the Dali Universe a permanent exhibition of works by the artist Salvador Dalì, the aquarium London Aquarium, the gallery The Saatchi Gallery, and the museum The Namco Museum, a games room with the latest news, as well as the London Eye ticket office.

After County Hall is Westminster Bridge. If you want to walk along the river you have to take the tunnel under the bridge. Before doing so, however, you can climb the stairs to go to the bridge and see the lion statue next to County Hall, on the south side of the bridge, one of the last examples of Coade stone, a ceramic substance developed by the Victorian scientist Eleanor Coade . This statue originally stood outside the Lion Brewery, next to a larger lion that now stands in the Twickenham Rugby Club.

When you are on Westminster Bridge, you might want to visit the museum before continuing your walk along the river Florence Nightingale Museum, inside St. Thomas Hospital, on the west side of the bridge.

Westminstes building seen from the South Bank

Returning to the walk along the river, on the west side of Westminster Bridge, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful view of the Palace of Westminster, on the other side of the river.

As you continue along this last stretch of the South Bank promenade you will notice that the river changes dramatically and few tourists make it here. The raised benches offer a good place to sit and relax and enjoy the river view.

Approaching the next bridge, the Lambeth Bridge, you will see the building Lambeth Palace, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury from the 11th century. The present building was built in 1495. Along the building in the church of St Mary-at-Lambeth stands the Museum of Garden History, the museum of the history of gardening.

We then arrive at the end of the South Bank walk, the Lambeth Bridge. If you wish to continue walking, two routes continue this walk: the Thames Path which continues along the river, and the Jubilee Walkway which forms a loop in central London. The Thames Path can be followed on both sides of the river although the northern part is more pleasant. The buildings on the south side are mostly apartment blocks. After Tate Britain however not much remains to be seen until you reach the hospital Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Jubilee Walkway is more interesting and continues by crossing the north side of the river on the Lambeth Bridge and then turning north, to the right and proceeding to the Houses of Parliament and beyond.
