Mzuzu is the largest city in North Malawi. For the most part it's just a stop on the route to or from Nkhata Bay or further south, and the border tanzanian.

The city is well connected to the north and south by bus. The AXA bus company provides very civilized transport at a reasonable price. There are also rocky buses available, cheaper, as well as the usual minibuses that carry up to 20 people - scary, but cheap.

If you are from Mbeya, Tanzania beware of established scammers selling fake bus tickets. One of these scammers even has an office in the main transit area in Mbeya, They also have professional looking price and service lists. He can even use a cell phone to check seat availability for you. As of September 2008, there were no buses going from Mbeya to Mzuzu or any other town across the border.

To get to Mzuzu from Mbeya, take a minibus to the border town of Kyela, Tanzania. Then walk 5 to 10 min and walked past the border post to Malawi. After the border it is necessary to go to the center of a small town called Karonga. There may be minibuses at the border, but they are rare. Besides the typical African market products, there is not much to buy here. There are the most northerly ticket machines in Malawi, useful if you are coming from Tanzania or staying longer than expected in Nkhata Bay.

• A-1 Restaurant (on the street behind major banks and grocery stores in a commercial area) – Definitely the best food in town with a menu emphasizing Indian dishes with some Chinese selections. Wide choice of dishes which are generally quite good. The prices are quite high for Mzuzu, but very reasonable by Western standards. (last update Feb. 2018)
• Obrigado Leisure Park (in the center with a horrible red and yellow advertisement for Celtel) – Inside the fence, you will find a beautiful garden with tables scattered all over the place. It has a typical Malawian catering menu including nsima or rice with meats or condiments of your choice. A corner to have a beer in the evening. (last update Feb. 2018)
• Pizzeria (near the bus station) – serves decent thin crust pizzas cooked over a wood fire. it is managed by an extremely lively couple, Paolo and Emanuelle. Next door, Paolo runs a shop stocked with some Western luxury goods such as M & Ms and good toilet paper. (last update Feb. 2018)
