About

History

The monastery of monks, founded by the vornic Cernica Izvoranul, called Știrbei, is documented in 1608, by the royal deed of Radu Vodă Șerban. In that year, the vornic rebuilt an old hermitage, to which he gave his name and endowed it with lands, forests and villages, to the eternal memory of his people. The monastery is built in the middle of a lake surrounded by forests, presenting in any season the same fascination, both for the eyes and for the heart. After being temporarily abandoned due to an epidemic, the monastery was restored in 1842 by St. Calinic (1787-1868), who was abbot of the monastery for 31 years. His miracle-working relics rest in a coffin in the monastery's large church. Many are the wonders worth mentioning of Saint Calinicus, from miraculous healings to the return of men to their homes, to the marriage of girls or to the unraveling of terrible vices. At Cernica, there is not a day when believers from all over the country do not come to pray before the Holy Relics for the relief of troubles and the forgiveness of sins.

In 1781, Father Archimandrite Gheorghe, one of the disciples of Saint Paisie from Neamț, came as abbot of the monastery. He rebuilt the community of monks (which had disintegrated due to wars and plague) and built the church from ruin. The monastic life from Cernica thus receives a new advance. In place of the old church, in 1815, the Church of St. Nicholas of Ostrov was built, whose interior painting was done by the painter Fotache, one of the last masters of medieval painting. The place had as abbot, between 1818 and 1850, the brightest and most representative man of the time: St. Hierarch Calinic of Cernica, founder of monasteries and churches, hospitals, schools and homes for orphans. During its construction, the surrounding walls and the Church of St. George, the abbey building and almost all the houses on the island bearing the name of the same Holy Great Martyr were built. A lover of culture, Calinic laid the foundations of a valuable library and opened a church painting school here. An institution of real importance was the Monastic Seminary, which functioned here and gave account of the Church, including the Most Blessed Father Patriarch Teoctist. The body of cells in which the monks live today is protected by the walls of the fortress, with an architecture typical of the plain areas, ie not too high, so that it can be easily repaired.
