Bucharest is the capital romania and cultural, commercial and industrial center of the country. It has almost 2 million inhabitants and an urban agglomeration of 2.2 million inhabitants, the sixth largest city in the European Union.

NEIGHBORHOODS

Bucharest is divided into six sectors, which include several neighborhoods:

About

History

Manuc's inn in 1841

Given the favorable living conditions in the plain area, the area around Bucharest was inhabited very early. This has been demonstrated by numerous discoveries from prehistoric times. We know, however, little about the origins of the city itself. The oldest known document that mentions the city is from 1459.

Due to its central location inside the country, the city has often been historically attacked by barbarian peoples. In 1595 the city was conquered by the Turks and largely destroyed, but also rebuilt soon after. Since 1659, Bucharest is the capital of Wallachia.

During the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu (* 1688, † 1714), the city was expanded through new streets. In addition to many representative buildings in the city, during this period even Mogoșoaia Castle was built, 15 km to the northwest.

The first half of the 19th century was a problematic period for Bucharest due to the revolts against the political influence of the Ottoman Empire and Russia. After the unification of the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, Bucharest became in 1862 the capital of the new kingdom of Romania.

Climate

Climate diagram of Bucharest

The climate is continental. In June, July and August, the average temperature is above 20 ° C. Winter temperatures often move below 0 ° C. However, they only rarely fall below -10 ° C. In January 1888, with -30 ° C reached the lowest temperature and on August 20, 1945 it reached 41.1 ° C at the highest temperature in Bucharest ever measured. Often the city is haunted by winter Crivăţ, a cold continental wind that comes from the northeast and brings snowstorms. There is significant rainfall throughout the year in Bucharest. Even in the driest months, it rains from time to time. The average annual rainfall is 598 mm. In contrast, June is the rainiest month of the year with 82 mm of rainfall and the driest month is 36 mm in October.

Location

The capital of Romania covers an area of 228 km. It is located 280 km west of the Black Sea in the middle of the Muntean Plain. The Danube flows almost 70 km south of the city. It flows through Bucharest Dambovita and its tributary Colentina, a chain of nine lakes in the northern part of the city. The city is accessible through two airports and an international train station. Other big cities near Bucharest are Ploiesti are and piteşti.

Bucharest-Otopeni Airport Henri Coandă

Bucharest-Otopeni Airport Henri Coandă (OTP) is the international airport in Bucharest. This is the largest and most important airport in the country.

From the airport to the city

From Henri Coandă Airport, located in Otopeni, you can reach the city center by metro or bus. Alternatively, of course, taxis are more expensive but much more convenient.

"Henri Coanda Express Train" runs every day - almost every hour - between the airport and Bucharest North Railway Station. The journey from the airport to the train station takes about 5 minutes and then the train runs for about 25 minutes. A ticket costs 6 lei (April 2010).

Bus number 783 it operates from both airports to the city center and travels to the most important places. The trip (only two possible trips) costs 8.60 lei (June 2011, the equivalent of 1.92 euros). The bus stop is located on the ground floor of the Henri Coandă Airport building, one floor below arrival. Careful! Buy a ticket before the trip. Route 783: Henri Coandă Airport, Baneasa Airport, Arc de Triomphe, Charles de Gaulle Square, Victoriei Square, Roman Square, University Square, Unirii Square.

Bucharest-Baneasa Airport Aurel Vlaicu (BBU) is the smaller but more central of the two Bucharest airports. It was used until the end of March 2012 and all scheduled flights (including Wizz Air, Blue Air and Germanwings) moved to Bucharest-Otopeni airport.

With train

The international train station in Bucharest is called Northern Railway Station. From there, about an hour away, but at irregular intervals, trains travel to other large cities in Romania, such as Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Constant, IASI or Suceava. In addition, trains leave three times a day Budapest, one of them right up to Vienna, as well as every day one in Moscow and at Sofia and at Istanbul.

All international trains traveling to Bucharest have sleeping cars. However, trains in Romania are quite slow (compared to European standards).

By bus

The big cities of Romania are accessible with several bus companies. Specialized buses for long journeys (equipped with air conditioning and toilet) can be taken from most major European cities and go directly to Bucharest.

By car

The journey by car to Bucharest is due to the lack of highways in Romania quite unpleasant. In addition, traffic in Bucharest is characterized by aggressive driving.

Because Bucharest is chronically full of cars, especially at intersections, traffic is blocked throughout the day. Also, parking spaces are hard to find.

Individual mobility without your own car is possible in Bucharest and with taxis, which offer fair and low prices. However, the journey by car is worthwhile if you want to visit for example the more remote parts of the country (for example the monasteries in Moldavia or Bran castle of Vlad Țepeș). Alternatively, you can rent a car. Car rentals can be made at the airport and on the ground floor of the Hotel Intercontinental from city center.

Mobility

The tram from Bucharest

Bucharest has four metro lines and several tram and bus lines.

STB lines

Before boarding the STB, passengers must ensure that they are in possession of a travel document corresponding to the means of transport with which they are to travel and the fare valid for that period.

The Active Card, loaded with electronic wallet, as well as the Multiple Card, loaded with a number of trips, will be validated in the devices specially installed for this purpose, immediately after boarding the means of transport.

The equivalent value of the travel tax deducted once the transport card has been validated entitles the holder to a single journey, without interruption, only on the route of a half-journey (tour), from the moment of boarding to the end of the line. Continuing the journey on the same route, but in the opposite direction (return), requires a new validation.

The season tickets and travel cards that can be purchased from the RATB distribution network will be used only for the conditions for which they were issued. Nominal Asset Cards or nominal travel cards may not be passed on to others.

At the Card Recharge Centers, only the types of travel tickets existing on the customer's card are recharged. The recharging of travel tickets at a reduced rate is performed only at the Card Issuing and Recharging Centers.

Depending on the travel needs of the passengers, the ACTIV card can be used both in the STB network and in the Metrorex network.

In case of theft, loss or damage due to the user's fault of the Personalized Asset card, the automatic charging system ensures the possibility of recovering the balance corresponding to the credit remaining in the electronic wallet or the remaining unused period of the subscription held. Thus, the user will go to an STB Card Issuing and Recharging Center, where he will submit a written request to block the card and release a new support, on which the unused balance will be translated. The transfer is made on the spot in case of subscription and in 24 hours for electronic wallet, exprex trips and metrorex limit subscription - 62 trips. Free card Nominal assets are granted only once on the first issue of the card. The new support is purchased for the amount of 4.7 lei.

The list of lost cards can be consulted in order to recover them by the holders.

Metro Titanium

The value of travel documents can also be paid by bank card - VISA or MASTERCARD - at all online points of sale (card issuing and recharging centers).

Metro (METROREX)

The metro has four lines (M1, M2, M3 and M4) and covers the city extensively.

It is usually the cheapest way to get around Bucharest. If you live in peripheral areas, this is also the fastest way to get around.

Taxi

There are many taxi companies in Bucharest. Taxis have the rates displayed on the doors.

Be careful, use only Taxis of reputable companies, such as SpeedTaxi, Meridian or Cobalcescu.

If the taxi does not have red plates on the doors, has numbers from outside Bucharest or does not start the taxometer, it is better to get out of the car.

Car rental

Usually, reputable companies are based in or near Otopeni Henri Coanda Airport.

Inside the airport you will find companies such as international Avis, and near it you can find large local companies such as Alana Rent a Car or Ascari as well as those from Atlass rent a car

Airport transfer

If it is more convenient for you to drive someone else, you can call on the services of airport transfer or car rental with driver and thus get rid of the worry of driving in the crowds of Bucharest.

  •  1 Church of the Annunciation (Curtea Veche Church), located near the remains of the voivodship palace, is the oldest building in the city preserved to this day. It was built in 1899 by Ion Mincu, one of the most important Romanian architects.
  •  5 Kretzulescu Church is one of the monuments that best captures the spirit of Brancovenesti art and architecture. The house was built between 1720-1722 through the efforts of Chancellor Iordache Kretzulescu and his wife Sava (one of Constantin Brancoveanu's daughters). Its interior frescoes were made by Gheorghe Tattarescu (1859-1860).
  •  6 Antim Monastery was built between 1714-1715 by Bishop Antim Ivireanu, one of the most prominent cultural figures during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu. Safety

Basically, Bucharest is a pretty safe city, even if sometimes it doesn't seem like it. However, there is some crime in neighborhoods of social inequality.

Extremely poor neighborhoods in Bucharest, especially in the south, should be avoided by tourists.
