About
Short history
The Frumoasa Monastery from Iași is located on the site of a former older church, founded in the 16th century by the hetman Balică.
These places went down in history during the second reign of Petre Șchiopul, and the founder of the first church in Frumoasă -1583- was Melentie Balică, a boyar who held high positions in the divan of Moldavia.
The name of the Frumoasa monastery must be related to the "fairytale picturesque" of the place, where the church and the royal courts stood. "The surrounding pond, which completed the splendor of the natural setting, made the Frumoasa monastery a small fortress on the island."
Towards the end of the 16th century, in the vicinity of the place where today's Beautiful Church stands, a monastery was built, founded by the so-called hetman Leonte and Melentie Balică, gatekeeper of Suceava and hetman of Moldavia, originally from Wallachia and descended from the great family. of the Buzești boyars. Documented, Balică's monastery was dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
The church of Hetman Balica and his wife, Ana, was dedicated to the Transfiguration Monastery on Mount Sinai. On August 9, 1586, when it is documented that Melentie Balică the hetman was dead, the monastery had already been worshiped.
Melentie Balică's successor, Isac Balică, great treasurer and then hetman, beheaded by Ștefan Tomșa after the battle of Cornul lui Sas, beautified the building of his predecessor. In the seventeenth century, wars and mismanagement of his fortunes, led the church to ruin.
The particularly picturesque position in which Balică's monastery was located determined the ruler of Moldavia, Gregory II Ghica, to restore it between 1727-1733, adding to it a set of wonderful oriental palaces from Ţarigrad, some courtyards. spacious, a large pond nearby on which boats and kayaks could walk, as well as gardens with artesian wells.
Rebuilt in the Renaissance style, the church impressed its contemporaries who nicknamed it "Beautiful". From now on, the monastery will serve for many of the rulers of Moldova as a summer residence. Under the name "Frumoasa", the church is mentioned in a Greek note from 1723 from a Gospel of itss, found in Bucharest and redeemed by the protosinghel Silvestru.
A decade later, during the Russian occupation of 1739, the houses built by Grigore Ghica at Frumoasă were demolished. In the spring of 1740, Ghica had other houses built inside the Frumoasă Monastery.
A new restoration of the Frumoasa church took place in 1753 during the reign of Matei Ghica, son of the ruler Grigorie II Ghica.
The current building of the church dates from 1836-1839, being the foundation of the abbot Ioasaf Voinescu, who built it from the ground up, as shown by the inscription that mentions the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, a second patron saint in honor of the Assumption.
