Radu Voda Monastery is a monastery of Bucharest, Romania.

About

Short history

On the place where the Radu Vodă Monastery stands today, important archeological vestiges dating from the Paleolithic period have been discovered. In the time of the Geto-Dacians, the settlement on the hill near today's Union Square had strong fortifications, constituting a strategic point of first rank.

The first church on Radu Vodă hill is attributed to the ruler Mihnea cel Rău (1508-1509), the second being the foundation of the ruler Alexandru II Mircea (1568-1577), great-grandson of Vlad Țepeș. His son, Mihnea Turcitul, will endow the monastery with estates, villages and precious smells - increasing its prestige in Wallachia. During his reign, the first library in Bucharest was established in the monastery. In 1595, the Radu Vodă Monastery will be set on fire by Sinan Pasha's troops, in their withdrawal from Mihai Viteazul's army. Radu Vodă Mihnea rebuilt the monastery from its foundations, in 1625, dedicating it to the Ivirion Monastery from Athos. Patriarch Macarie of Antioch and Paul of Aleppo, visiting the Radu Vodă Monastery in 1653-1657, remain deeply impressed by its architecture. The earthquakes of 1829 and 1838 will cause great damage to the Radu Vodă Monastery, requiring extensive restoration works. In 1875, Titu Maiorescu, at that time minister of cults, decided to demolish a significant part of the monastery - as well as other monastery premises and inns in Bucharest -, considered unsanitary buildings. The church, the bell tower and some of the cells will remain undamaged. If in the period 1839-1847 in Radu Vodă the Metropolitan Seminary will function, and later, for a short period, the French High School, at the beginning of the communist period, a school of party cadres will function here. The buildings of the Theological Seminary, located south of the church, date from 1893, being built by Ion Scorțeanu and his sister Maria Șchiopescu, as boarders of the seminary. In 1960, the monastery was disbanded. PF Justinian will restore the church from Radu Vodă between 1969 and 1974, the place being reconsecrated in 1979. The painting of the church belongs to the archimandrite father Sofian Boghiu, but in the narthex a significant part of Gheorghe Tattarescu's painting is preserved. The monastery was reactivated in 1998 by PF Teoctist.

In the church of Radu Vodă Monastery is the tomb of Patriarch Justinian Marina.
