The historical Nógrád county - Slavic Novohrad, new Castle - was divided to about 50% between Hungary (southern part) and the Czechos after the peace treaty of Trianon in 1919Slovakia (northern part). The part of the historical region that is now in Slovakia is now the tourist region Poipľe (Eipel area).

in Balassagyarmat:

  • The former town hall of the city. Built in 1835.
  • Protestant church. Built in the baroque style around 1785.
  • Roman Catholic Church. From 1740, also baroque.
  • "Star House". Presents local historical collections for visitors.
  • Palóc Museum. With folklore presentations.

in Hollókő:

  • Hollókő Castle
  • The village of Hollókő itself. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. For the tourists there is much to see of the former way of life of the village, especially the old town is worth seeing.

in Salgótarján:

  • Castle Salgó
  • Somoskő Castle
  • Underground mine museum. The only underground in Hungary.
  • Historical Museum of Nógrád County
