Understand
The regions of Ovamboland, Kunene, Caprivi and Kavango are located north of the Red line, also called cordon sanitaire (veterinary cordon fence VCF). It is a pest exclusion fence separating northern Namibia and parts power stations and southern from country. It was originally a police zone to control the north-south travel of the indigenous population in the South West Africa. Its name comes from its representation in red ink on a 1911 map created by the German colonial administration. The red line has been modified several times and has been since the 1960s also used as a control mechanism to isolate outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease present in northern southern farms. People north of this line are not allowed to sell their cattle abroad outside of theSouth Africa, while those in the South can sell their meat anywhere.
