Nanxun

Nanxun(Chinese: 南浔, Pinyin: Nánxún, south of the Xun River) is an interesting little water town in the Chinese province Zhejiang. It is within easy reach of known targets such as Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou, but is not one of the standard excursion destinations, which makes it an interesting and little-visited alternative Tongli and Zhujiajiao makes. The place develops its very special charm, especially in the morning hours. In Nanxun it is definitely worth getting up at 5:00 am and strolling along the old canal.

As a result of silk production, Nanxun was once the richest of the ancient water cities and now looks back on 1400 years of history. Its up-and-coming era was once in the Song Dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty under Ruler Jiajin, it became one of the most important trading cities in Zhejiang Province and was even mentioned in ancient poems. The buildings, which still extend over a length of 2 kilometers along the canal, have survived the turbulent centuries and are still inhabited today.[1]

The nearest airport with many connections is in Hangzhou. The next major international hub is Shanghai.

By train

Nanxun does not have a train station. The next connection to the fast rail network is in Huzhou. The village, which is 50 kilometers away, can be reached by bus or taxi.

By bus

You can usually get to Nanxun by bus. The 1 Bus station is located north of the river not far from the city center. The short drive to the center costs by auto ricksaw (嘟嘟 車) 10 yuan. The place is approached from all major cities in the area. So you can get directly from Nanxun without any problems Suzhou (RNB 25), Huzhou or Hangzhou (RNB 10).

As a rule, you will move around the city on foot, since as a traveler you will mostly be in or near the old town. In the city there are also some kind of tuk-tuks that you can stop for a ride (around CNY 10 in the city).

Tourist Attractions

The place is known for its old town "Nanxun ancient town". It stretches along some inner-city canals and is easy to explore on foot. A visit to the area costs RNB 100 entry. Small ticket booths are set up at various locations for this purpose.

  • Boat trip: You can row a boat along the canal. The boats start at the Little Lotus Garden and go to the Baijian Lou houses. Half the way costs RMB 120, the whole RMB 240 and including the return trip are RMB 360. The price is for the boat that can accommodate up to 8 people. It can also be acted upon.
  • Taking photos: Nanxun offers some beautiful subjects for photographers. At sunrise from 5:00 a.m., the northern part of the old town is ideal, where you can watch the city slowly wake up and, for example, the residents washing their clothes at the canal early. Starting at de Tongjin Bridge, one should walk to the Baijian Lou houses on one side of the canal and back on the other side. There are also some beautiful motifs at dusk. Parks and gardens

The city also has a number of gardens, the most famous of which is the Small Lotus Garden.

A number of shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts can be found right on the Old Town canal. A selection of ATMs can be found on Taian Road, northwest of the Old City.

There are a few restaurants in the old town on the canal. You can find them in the southern part on both sides of the canal. Here you can sit relaxed by the water. There are also restaurants and tea rooms between Tongjin Bridge and Hongji Bridge north of the canal. In the northern section, however, there are only residential buildings.

There is hardly any real night life in Nanxun. A stroll along the canal is recommended at sunset. The old town develops a special charm at dusk. You can end the evening in one of the restaurants in the old buildings on the canal.

Nanxun itself is more of a destination for excursions from larger places such as Hangzhou, Suzhou or Shanghai out. 2-day trips are ideal. Those who stay there for a long time can go to Tai Hu Lake or the nearest town from Nanxun Huhzou visit.
