THE Nigeria is a country of Western Africa.

Understand

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the eighth most populous country in the world; with over 148 million inhabitants, the country contains the largest 'black' population in the world. It is a regional power, listed among the "Next Eleven" economies.

Nigeria is located in the Gulf of Guinea. Its largest cities are located in the southern lowlands. The central part of the country is made up of hills and plateaus. To the east, on the border with Cameroon, is part of the Adamawa plateau or massif (known as the Gotel Mountains, reaching 2,419 meters at Chappal Waddi, the highest point in the country. The north consists of arid lowlands. O benin, O Niger, O Chad and Cameroon. In size it is a little bigger than the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.

Forest and woodland occur mainly in the southern third of the country, affected by seasonal rains from the Atlantic Ocean between June and September. As you head north, the country becomes drier and the vegetation more like that of the savannah. The northern third of the country falls within the semi-arid region of the Sahel, which marks the southern boundary of the Sahara Desert.

Nigeria is divided into three by the Niger and Benue rivers, which reach the country from the northeast and northwest and join more or less in the center, near the new capital, Abuja. From there, the Niger River, added with water from the Benue, flows southwards until it flows into the sea in a large delta.

LGBT Travel

Homosexuality is illegal. LGBT travelers should be extra careful when traveling to Nigeria, especially in the North, where Sharia law enforcement can be strict due to the activities of Boko Haram, an Islamist group that is dedicated to jihad. Both gays and lesbians can run. Public displays of affection are highly discouraged.

  • On May 30, 2013, the "anti-gay" law that makes gay marriage a crime was passed.
