The urban layout of the municipality of Niscemi dates back to the second half of the 17th century and is characterized by an orthogonal grid that develops around Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, where there are two blocks missing and where the most prestigious monuments and buildings of the city overlook. The main axes of the city branched off from the square, in the north-south and east-west directions. The original urban layout of Niscemi has a regular checkerboard pattern with plug-in blocks.
