Geography

Northeastern India is a vast region that shares four international borders with the Bhutan, the Myanmar (Burma), China (Tibet) and the Bangladesh. The region is divided into seven states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura).

  • 5 Cherrapunji (1.484 m)  – small village of Meghalaya, Cherrapunji is the rainiest place on the planet. The town is famous for its waterfalls and tropical forests similar to the Amazon rainforest.

National parks and wildlife sanctuaries

  • 1 Manas National Park  – This national park is home to tigers and red pandas.
  • 2 Kaziranga National Park  – Two thirds of the Indian rhino population live there, or 2,000 out of the 3,000 Indian rhinos existing on the planet. The Bengal tiger and the Asian elephant are also very present species in the park. Kaziranga National Park is also a remnant of what the natural landscape of the Bramahpoutre Valley used to be.
  • 3 Keibul Lamjao National Park  – Keibul Lamjao National Park is located in the center of the state of Manipur, it is the only floating national park in the world, it is located on the shores of Lake Loktak, one of the few lakes in the world that is home to floating islands. The park is also famous for being the habitat of the Sangai or Manipur Eld deer, an endangered species which is a symbol of Manipur.
  • 4 Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Wildlife Sanctuary  – The Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve located in the Brahmaputra Valley, in the state of Assam. The sanctuary is renowned throughout Assam for the diversity of monkeys that live in the reserve, the most famous of which are houlock gibbons, hairy entelles, sloth lorises and pygmy sloth lorises. The park is also the home of Asian elephants and panthers.
  • 5 Shiroi hills (1,500 - 2,570m)  – The hills of Shiroi or "Shiroi Hills" are one of the main attractions of the state of Manipur, these hills covered with forests and meadows are famous for a unique flower in the world: The lily of Shiroi (Lilium mackliniae), this lily is known around the world for its unique beauty and simplicity. The Shiroi Hills are also an excellent sanctuary for viewing local avifauna, the most prominent members of which are Blyth's Tragopan, Red-necked Hornbill and Hume's Pheasant.
  • 6 Namdapha National Park  – Namdapha National Park is an exceptional natural site that cannot be found in any other region of the planet, the park is home to the most northerly evergreen tropical rainforest and the lowest in altitude in the world. Namdapha is one of the richest places on the planet in terms of biodiversity, the park allows you to explore several types of ecoregions such as tropical forest, temperate forest, alpine meadow, low altitude plain, jungle. .. The fauna is also exceptional, we can see animals such as the Asian elephant, the red panda, the musk deer, the takin, the bharal, the biturong, the otter, the deer of Duvaucel, the Gibbon d'Houlocks, Assam macaque, langur ... The park is also famous for being the only national park in the world to house 4 species of big cats (Bengal Tiger, Snow Leopard or Ounce, Indian Leopard, Clouded panther).

Historical and religious sites

The hill is dotted with small Hindu temples, petroglyphs and huge statues of deities carved out of stone. The entire site is dated to the 7th and 9th centuries.

This region is certainly isolated, but it is starting to be more and more connected with the rest of the country. The main highway that leads to this region is the "National Highway" 31C or NH31C which connects North Bengal (Galgalia) to East Assam (Bijni).

Road lane

The North East is accessible by road through a very narrow area that connects the region to India. This area which is called "Corridor de Siliguri" is one of the busiest arteries of the whole subcontinent. The NH31C, NH31 and SH12 highways are the main highways which allow to reach Assam and the North-East of India while traveling on frequentable roads.

Airway

The northeast of India is also accessible by air, there are two major international airports (Guwahati and Imphal) and a few other domestic airports (Agartala, Dibrugarh, Itanagar, Aizwal, Shillong, Silchar, Dimapur ...). Airlines such as Air India, Vistara, Spicejet, Goair and Indigo provide regular domestic flights to this region. As for international flights, the Bhutanese company Druk Air provides flights for Bangkok and Paro from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, the Burmese company Golden Myanmar Airlines operates flights to Mandalay from Imphal.

Railway track

Railways exist only in the states of Assam and Meghalaya, beyond that there are no more trains. Rail transport is quite safe in this region compared to the rest of the country, there are few delays and problems with traffic or numbers of passengers.

Circulate

Transport within the region is poorly developed. To move from city to city you can choose to take the bus or "Tata sumo". Tata sumo are a type of shared taxi which is very inexpensive. However, the roads are extremely bad and journeys of a few kilometers can take hours (it is much worse than in the rest of India)
