background

Around 1150 Duncan, 3rd Earl of Fife of the Clan MacDuff founded a Cistercian monastery. At the beginning, the Ducans North Berwick Castel, a wooden moth, built on what is now Castel Hill. In 1306 this was conquered by the Earl of Pembroke and abandoned in 1314. It became a Burgh in the 14th century and a Royal Burgh in the 15th century. Despite the connection to the railway network, the industrial revolution passed the place by. Whereby there are traces of settlement south of the North Berwick Law for about 2000 years. The port, laid out in the 12th century, also served as a ferry port for pilgrims to St Andrews.
