Nur-Sultan / Astana

Sultan only (cas .: Нұр-Сұлтан, Russian: Нур-Султан) has been the official name of the capital since 2019 Kazakhstan. From 1989-2019 she was known as Astana. In this era the southern part of the city was planned as the capital of the city according to the big man-addicted ideas of the president Nursultan Nazarbayev built with a lot of towering glass and concrete. All of this seems very sterile.

Nur-Sultan is in the East Kazakh time zone, GMT 6, i.e. CET 5 and Moscow 3 hours.

The country's cultural and economic center is and remains the administrative seat of the Soviet era: Almaty (Alma-Ata) in southern Kazakhstan.

background

Model of the capital Astana. The analogy to World capital Germania Albert Speers imposes itself.

The fortress, which was founded in 1830 as a post for the armies of the tsarist empire advancing into Central Asia, was built in the middle of the Kazakh steppe on the banks of the Ishim River. It was called Akmolinsk until 1961, then Zelinograd and after independence in 1992, Aqmola (Ақмола) for six years. The name was changed to Nur-Sultan when the autocrat, who had been in office for almost 30 years, left the presidency. Should the currently ruling corrupt clique of the extended presidential family be overthrown, another renaming is to be expected.

According to the 1989 census, 277,000 people lived here (17% Kazakhs, 54% Russians). In 2012, the Kazakh share of the now 744,000 inhabitants had risen to two thirds. The state-financed construction boom came to an end with the 2017 Expo. At the beginning of 2020, 1.36 million people lived here.

The surrounding district still bears the name Aqmola (Ақмола облысы).

If you want to get cheaper from Central Europe, you will get cheaper with Turkish companies. In 2018 there were flights to various Siberian cities, Beijing and to Central Asian destinations Tashkent but not to Mongolia or Tajikistan. In general, connections from Europe to Almaty are better than to the economically less important capital.
