Omsk (Омск) is a city of Russia, located in the Western Siberia and capital ofhomonymous region.

To know

In the opinion of most people, Omsk is a destination unable to hold back the interest of potential tourists. Indeed, twenty years ago Omsk boasted a number of attractions but administrators and planners have scrambled to tear down traditional wooden buildings and erect mundane glass and steel skyscrapers in their place.

The fury of the bulldozers has escaped only a small neighborhood where it is possible to relive the atmosphere of the 19th century. The center still retains buildings of a certain value such as the cathedral of San Nicola dei Cossacchi and the theater of dramatic art.

Background

In 1716 a Cossack unit led by Ivan Buchholz erected the wooden fort of Omsk with the aim of protecting the Russian border which at the time ran along the Ishim and Irtysh rivers from the incursions of nomads from the steppes. Omsk obtained city status in 1782 and in 1822 became the administrative capital of Western Siberia. Omsk was also a penal colony: the writer became an important center of Siberian exile. Fyodor Dostoevsky was incarcerated in an Omsk prison from 1850 to 1854.

The development of the city was determined by the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Many non-Russian interest companies and diplomatic representations from Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom opened branches in Omsk. In 1910, the Siberian exhibition of agriculture and industry took place in Omsk. The city was nicknamed at the time "Chicago of Siberia" and "Milwaukee of Siberia".

After the October Revolution, the white anti-Bolshevik forces took control of Omsk. In 1918, a provisional government was established led by the Arctic explorer and admiral Kolchak. Omsk was proclaimed the capital of Russia and its central bank was charged with maintaining the gold reserves of the former empire, but the following year the Red Army forced Kolchak and his government to flee the city and retreat to Irkutsk.
