Nusa Dua it is a part peninsula southern Bali, famous for luxury hotels.

To know

The place name Nusa Dua can be used in two ways: either it can refer to the entire eastern side of the Bukit Peninsula at the southern tip of Bali, or it can refer to the tourist enclave ("'Kawasan Pariwisata', literally Tourism District ) on the southeast side of this peninsula.

This article covers everything in the Nusa Dua enclave plus the Tanjung Benoa Peninsula and some points west of the Sawangan Village Enclave. Everything on the Bukit Peninsula west of Sawangan is covered in the article Uluwatu.

In addition to a number of luxury hotels, Nusa Dua is home to Bali's most famous golf course and the island's premier convention center. The beaches here are gorgeous - white sand, deep, long and safe for swimming. The public beach at Geger is the best if you are not staying in Nusa Dua. Here is also one of the best museums in Bali. The museum is almost always empty.

The Nusa Dua Enclave has three guarded gates and anyone entering is subject to a security inspection. Some may not like the controls but many tourists appreciate them to feel safer especially after the terrorist attacks that took place in Bali in 2002.

How to get

Map of Nusa Dua

By plane

The international airport is approximately 20 - 30 minutes away by car and a pre-paid taxi ride from there will cost between 95,000 and 110,000 Rp. If you are staying in the area then your hotel will no doubt be able to arrange to pick you up at the airport.

By car

Nusa Dua is 40km south of Denpasar, capital of the province. It is accessed from Kuta (20-30 minutes) e Jimbaran (15 minutes) on the main road south called Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, which then becomes Jalan Bypass Nusa Dua as you approach the enclave.

By bus

Public transport is scarce but there are some bemos from Tegal's terminal Denpasar.

How to get around

What see

Morning at the beach
  • Pantai Geger (Geger Beach). The public beach of Nusa Dua. This gorgeous white-sand beach, at the western end of the enclave, retains a lot of the character that's lacking in the Nusa Dua resort area. Many of the workers like the restaurant workers, the masseuses and other employees work for the local cooperative, helping them means helping the locals. Geger has a cool breeze as it is one of the few east facing beaches and thanks to the cliff away from the beach it has some of the warmest waters in Bali. Continue west out of Nusa Dua passing the golf course and then the Hotel St Regis (on your left). Shortly after St Regis, take the first left turn towards the beach and proceed to the car park.
  • Water Blow. It is a rock formation in which the ocean water is channeled and then comes out with a large spray from the rocks.
  • Pasifika Museum, Blok P, BTDC Nusa Dua (near Bali Collection), 62 361 774935, @. Ecb copyright.svgRp 70,000. Simple icon time.svg10-18 every day. A very little appreciated and little known attraction. It is a splendid museum and is highly recommended for anyone interested in art from Bali, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific region. Look for exhibits focusing on European artists who have made Bali their home, as well as renowned local painters. The Indochinese exhibit is impressive, as are the displays of Polynesian artifacts. There are works by artists including Paul Gauguin, Theo Meier, Le Mayeur, Rudolf Bonnet, Arie Smith, Hendrik Paulides, Isaac Israel, Emilio Ambron and many more.
  • Serangan Island (Turtle Island). Ecb copyright.svgUS $ 30. Boats are available from Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa, usually glass-enclosed and allow you to observe marine life from inside the boat. Serangan is a protected area for turtles. Locals keep the turtle eggs until they hatch and then the young specimens are released on local beaches. In addition to turtles, there are also reptiles, birds, snakes and bats. The sea turtles that give Serangan its fame are caught and sold for food here.

Several companies propose water sports and activities (banana boat, parasailing, jetski, diving etc.). Book directly on the beach or through the hotel. All the operators work together so the prices are more or less always the same.

  • Blue Point Beach (Suluban pantai), jalan pantai suluban, ungasan. This beach is less prestigious than Kuta, Sanur or Nusa Dua, but it is fascinating. If you want to see the beach from above, the café area has a great vantage point but if you really want to experience it you can walk down the steps to the beach. To reach it you have to walk along the rather steep side of the hill, through the passage between two cliffs.
  • Pandawa Beach (the hidden beach), Jalan kutuh, north kuta (near the Uluwatu temple). Ecb copyright.svgIDR 10,000 admission ticket. Pandawa Beach is in Kutuh Village, South Kuta District, Badung Regency; 3 km from Nusa Dua and Uluwatu Temple. In the past it was hidden by a hill and it was difficult to get there so much that it was almost always empty and known only by surfers and a few local and non-local tourists.

Events and parties

What to do

Parasailing At Tanjung Benoa, Bali

There is no shortage of spas in Nusa Dua too. In addition to hotels, there are several options.

A large swath of the Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa waterfront is connected via a footpath, and morning walks here are especially recommended. The trail passes right in front of Ayodya Resort in the south for about 7km north to Tanjung Benoa's Grand Mirage. This also passes close to two temples.

Shopping

How to have fun

There is no great nightlife, just the hotels that organize beach parties.

Where to eat

There aren't many quality restaurants in Nusa Dua outside of luxury hotels. The Jalan By Pass which connects Nusa Dua to Jimbaran, the airport and Kuta is home to a large number of Japanese and other Asian restaurants aimed at tour groups. Generally, these are best avoided.
