background

View from the caldera to Oia and the port of Ammoudi

The place became under the rule of the Venetians Apano Meria called, they built the Argyri castle to protect against pirates, and the seafaring town had 2 ports, Ammoudi lies in a bay in the west, on the south coast is the port of Armeni. In between is the islet Agios Nikolaos, named after one of St. Chapel dedicated to Nicholas. After the Cyclades came to Greece, the place got the name Oía after an ancient settlement, the inhabitants of the place are still referred to as Apanomerites.

More than 100 captains with their families and ship crews once lived in Oía, and the seafaring village was considered to be wealthy. Oía was also largely destroyed in the earthquake of 1956. The place has long been rebuilt, but there are a few gaps that allow an insight into the construction of the earlier residents: most of the houses on the edge of the crater were actually caves dug into the tufa with a front facade.

In addition to the two ports, the villages of Perivolas and Finikia on the edge of the crater, which have grown together with Oía, as well as the small town of Tholos in the interior and Baxedes or Paradissos on the north coast belong to the village of Oía.

Tourist Attractions

Oia and Lontza Castle (Argyri Castle)

Those who like Cycladic architecture will get their money's worth in Oía. White houses with blue shutters and doors, numerous chapels with small bell towers define the picture. Winding alleys are just so wide that it was possible to transport goods with a mule. In Oía, however, you can see more color than usual in the towns: pastel-colored facade paints loosen up the townscape. Some of the houses are also more ornate than elsewhere: the captains' houses

The main attraction in Oía is the sunset. Everything flows to the edge of the crater, the best places are of course in the far west, and an hour before sunset numerous mostly young tourists besieged the old walls of the Lontza Castle, as the Argyli Fort is also called. Older people prefer to sit in one of the numerous taverns, enjoy the view of the port of Ammoudi, the windmill, the crowd on the walls of the fort and of course the sunset.

Also worth seeing are the numerous shops with the usual souvenirs, but also with very beautiful handicrafts, some of which are marketed by the artists themselves. The prices show that wealthy cruise passengers are among the customers.

The Marine Museum near the town hall, open daily except Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Exhibits: ship models, figureheads, nautical equipment.
