Omarama is a municipality in the Waitaki District and is located in the region Canterbury.

The small town of Omarama is located at the top of the Waitaki Valley near the Lake Benmore in the Mackenzie Basin. In the sparsely populated region, pasture farming predominates, sheep are predominantly raised. Many meadows are characterized by vegetation Tussock grass, a brownish, quite hard variety of grass that is worthless as fodder. In the west, the snow-covered mountain ridge of the Southern Alps forms a picturesque panorama, in between there are lakes that are fed by glacier water and show an almost unnatural turquoise-blue water surface, while others are almost deep black in color.
