Once Brewed is a small settlement on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, which are also called Twice Brewed known, and consists of little more than a youth hostel, an inn and a national park center.

background

Hadrian's Wall at Once Brewed

Although Once Brewed is a really small and relatively lonely settlement high up on the northernmost foothills of the Pennines, and actually only has a bus stop and a few farms further away in addition to a youth hostel, inn and national park center, the place is only due to its location almost 100 m below Hadrian's Wall, which stretches along the hills here, extremely popular with tourists, for overnight stays or just a stopover.

The place is particularly curious because of its two place names, about which there is no agreement: If you come from the west on the B 6318, Twice Brewed is written on the place name sign; If you are traveling from the east, you will get to Once Brewed according to the place name sign there - the two place name signs are just 200 m apart.

The name of the much older Twice Brewed Inn can be traced back to the weak ale that the farmers brewed in earlier times and which led the inn's guests to order their ale "twice brewed". The name Once Brewed, on the other hand, dates back to 1934 and goes back to the opening of the (former) Youth Hostel that year - as the very first youth hostel in England. Lady Trevelyan, who resided in the nearby Wallington Hall, gave the opening speech as the hostess and, as a convinced tea drinker, said the sentence that has become famous (and ultimately eponymous), alluding to the neighboring Inn: "Of course there will be no alcohol served on these premises, so I hope the tea and coffee will only be brewed once." The old hostel was demolished in 2015 and replaced by the successor building "The Sill", which opened in 2017, but the name and history of the place will probably be preserved permanently.

Cyclists who are already arriving on this road should be advised of the dense traffic on the narrow road, which is confusing due to many "blind summits", especially the many carriage drivers and mobile homes, plus many coaches do not necessarily allow pleasure cycling on the route - dangerous or even However, it is not impossible for experienced cyclists. What is almost impossible is the way to the Hadrian's Wall itself, this is probably only possible for cyclists on unloaded MTBs.

  • 1  The Sill National Landscape Discovery Center, Bardon Mill, Hexham, NE47 7AN. Tel.: 44 1434 341181. The building itself should make a contribution to sustainability (e.g. through the use of regional building materials and the employment of people primarily from the immediate vicinity) and, thanks to its special construction, also with the long, grassy roof that can be walked on, blends in with nature.
