Oporów is mentioned for the first time in 1363. In the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Oporów was the family seat of the famous family of Oporowski nobles, the Sulima coat of arms. The voivode of Łęczyca, Mikołaj of Oporów, located a town here in the years 1399-1424 and built a stronghold - a fortalice. His son, Władysław of Oporów, one of the most influential politicians at the court of Władysław Jagiełło and Kazimierz Jagiellończyk - Crown Treasurer, Bishop of Włocławek, Archbishop of Gniezno and finally the Primate of Poland, erected a brick castle in Oporów in the years 1434-1449, which still exists today. The castle was to confirm the high status of the family and serve it in the last years of its life, which is why the building was given the character of a residence, largely relinquishing its defensive functions.

The castle is renovated, well-kept, it is one of the best-preserved gothic castles in Poland. It is situated on an island and surrounded by a moat. It houses the Museum of Stylish Interiors, with furniture, works of art, paintings, dishes, silverware, armor and firearms.

Władysław of Oporów in 1453 also founded the monastery. Pauline Fathers. In the 40s of the 17th century, Fr. Augustyn Kordecki, later prior and heroic defender Jasna Góra.
