Orange Walk Town is the second largest city in the Belize, as well as the capital of Orange Walk district.
To know
During the Mayan period, the area was known as Holpatin. Currently the city is also called Sugar City for its important sugar cane processing industry (traditional local industry).
Many residents are Mayans and mestizos of Spanish blood, and the historic center looks a lot like a Mexican city. To these were added the Mennonites who settled in the surrounding area especially around the Blue creek, Pakistani dedicated to trade, Chinese and Indians.
Geographical notes
The settlement is located on the west bank of the New River, 106 km north of Belize City and 50 km south of Corozal Town.
Background
The place was inhabited by the Maya Icache but in the 18th century they arrived in the English logging area. They threw the timber into the waters of the New River and then it was harvested in Corozal. Mexico clashing for a long time with the local Icache population. In one of these clashes, the leader of the Icache Marcos Canul perished. they were defeated. The newcomers were employed by local planters in the cultivation of corn and sugarcane which started a prosperous trade. Even today, sugar cane is used to make rum and the cultivation of corn began.
