Oranienburg is the largest city in Ruppiner Land in Brandenburg, in the north of Berlin.
background
The place was first used in 1216 Bothzowe mentioned what later Bochzowe and finally Bötzow has been. The city was looted and burned down during the Thirty Years War. From 1650 the place gained in importance when the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm built the palace here for his wife Louise Henriette of Orange Oranienburg erected. The name of the castle was then carried over to the planned baroque town. The Electress recruited Dutch experts and Huguenot religious refugees, whom she settled in Oranienburg, in order to set up model farms here (which laid the foundation for the later economic success of Brandenburg-Prussia). Under Friedrich Wilhelm's and Louise Henriette's son Friedrich (r. 1688–1713), the first King of Prussia, the castle was once again embellished and expanded.
In the 19th century, Oranienburg became an industrial site where, among other things, cotton was woven, sulfuric acid, aniline, carbolic acid and paraffin candles were produced. Oranienburg gained sad notoriety during the Nazi era as the location of the Oranienburg concentration camps (one of the very first concentration camps) and Sachsenhausen, which played a central role in the National Socialist concentration camp system. Mainly political opponents were imprisoned here and 100,000 people were murdered. During the Second World War, the city was badly damaged by bombing raids.
In the GDR era, Oranienburg was an important military location. After the turnaround and reunification, many companies had to close here too, but compared to other eastern German cities the economic situation is quite good and the population is stable or even slightly increasing. After several incorporations in 2003, it is over 40,000, making Oranienburg the fifth largest city in Brandenburg.

- 1 Oranienburg Castle. Magnificent baroque palace of the Brandenburg electors, badly damaged in World War II, but extensively restored and refurbished since the 1990s. As part of the State Garden Show 2009 (“Dream Landscapes of an Electress”), the large palace garden was also restored and redesigned.
- Former orphanage, Havelstrasse 29. Baroque, donated by Electress Louise Henriette.
- 2 Sachsenhausen Memorial, Road of Nations 22 (Bus 804, 821 "Sachsenhausen, Memorial"). Tel.: 49 3301 200-0, Email: [email protected]. One of the most important places to visit in Oranienburg, albeit a very serious and oppressive one. The concept of the former "National Memorial and Memorial" of the GDR was fundamentally revised after the fall of the Wall. Since then, the history of the Soviet special camp No. 7 after the end of the Second World War has also been taken into account. It is difficult to get a real idea of the size of the former camp, as only 5% of the former concentration camp has been preserved as a memorial, while most of it has been converted or reforested as barracks and residential areas. That is why there are other memorial stones and plaques in other parts of the city. Nevertheless, the memorial is extremely impressive, especially the permanent exhibition "Medicine and Crime" in the former sick bay of the concentration camp, the human experiments, "racial hygiene" measurement and murder of Sinti and Roma, "eugenics", forced sterilization and castration of homosexuals and the murder of sick people with numerous original exhibits as well as modern interactive multimedia means.Open: mid-March to mid-October daily 8.30 am to 6 pm, mid-October to mid-March 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, museums closed on Mondays during the winter months.Price: Free admission, public tours € 3 p. P.
