The town Neuruppin is located on the Ruppiner See in Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in Brandenburg. It is the traditional capital of the Ruppiner Land. It is nicknamed in memory of the poet Theodor Fontane, who was born here Fontane city. Neuruppin is sometimes considered "the most Prussian of all Prussian cities". With a total area of 305.24 square kilometers, it is one of the largest cities in Germany. Karl Friedrich Schinkel was also born here. Neuruppin is also the city of picture sheets, the forerunners of today's magazines, the made the city famous far beyond the country's borders in the 19th century. The city is idyllically embedded in the widely ramified and varied river and lake landscape of the Ruppin chain of lakes. Water sports are therefore a preferred leisure activity. In addition, nature offers many other attractions. The flat country invites you to go on long bike tours and hikes, and many interesting sights in the city entice you to stay longer.

Map of Neuruppin

Neuruppin was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1238, and the settlement received town charter as early as 1256. Neuruppin experienced an upswing at the end of the 17th century. The "old Fritz", Friedrich Wilhelm II., Commanded his own regiment in Neuruppin from 1732 to 1740. The breweries flourished and cloth for uniforms was mainly produced in the city.

Neuruppin became famous for the picture sheets, the forerunners of today's magazines. Neuruppin is also the birthplace of Theodor Fontane and the builder Friedrich Schinkel. In 1787 there was a major fire in Neuruppin that burned down almost the entire city. Only the monastery church of St. Trinitatis (1246), the infirmary chapel (1491), the Up-Hus (1692) and the preacher's widow's house (1736) were spared the fire. Johann Cuno Christoph Schinkel, the father of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, died shortly after the fire. The architect Bernhard Brasch was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm II to rebuild the city in a classical style. He also became the guardian of Friedrich Schinkel.

From 1791 Johann Bernhard Kühn ran a bookbinding, a lending library and a bookshop. His son Adolf Gustav Leopold Kühn took over the company from his father in 1822 and from then on produced picture sheets. In 1825 he introduced the lithography process invented by Alois Senefelder. From 1828 onwards he published the “Gemeinnützigen Anzeiger für Ruppin and the surrounding area”. The picture sheets were printed on a stone press and then colored by hand. In 1832 production was 1.2 million sheets. The motifs were above all current affairs, nature motifs as teaching material, love, board games, handicraft sheets for children and humorous pictures for entertainment. All picture sheets were with the production number and the words “Neu Ruppin. To have at Gustav Kühn. ”.

In 1835 and 1855 the companies Oehmigke & Riemschneider and Friedrich Wilhelm Bergemann settled in Neuruppin, which also produced picture sheets.

King Friedrich Wilhelm II is often portrayed as the builder of the city after the great fire of 1787, but this is not true. The reconstruction was led by the building inspector Bernhard Brasch, who designed the floor plan of the new town, senior building officer Berson, who designed the facades of the houses, judiciary Noeldechen, who obtained the money from the king, and state minister and chamber president von Voss, who oversaw the building. The generous, uniform city layout in the classical style with a representative north-south axis, three huge squares and a right-angled network of streets with two-storey eaves houses in the square form the historic city center that is still preserved today, one of the most impressive architectural achievements in Brandenburg-Prussia. Large parts of it are now under monument protection [1].

Due to the socialist shortage economy of the GDR, the old town of Neuruppin was spared the planned modern remodeling, but fell into noticeable deterioration by the end of the 1970s. It was not until the 1980s that the historical history of the city began to be considered, and a large part of the old town was reconstructed based on the classicist model. When the districts were rebuilt in 1993, Neuruppin was significantly enlarged by incorporating several municipalities. In May 2011 the iodine-containing thermal brine Neuruppin received state recognition as a healing spring. The thermal brine is through the Fontane thermal baths on the outskirts of the old town in the wellness area and used for heating purposes.
