The town Pearl Mountain is on the Stepenitz in the Prignitz, which extends in the northwest of the state of Brandenburg. It is the district town of the Prignitz district and also historically the capital of Prignitz.

Perleberg was founded in the 12th century and received city rights in 1239 based on the model of Salzwedel. A peace between Brandenburg and Pomerania was concluded there in 1420, as was a peace between Brandenburg and Mecklenburg in 1438, without Brandenburg's feudal claims being recognized. In 1638 the city was sacked by the Swedes and soon after by the imperial ones.

The one on the outskirts in the forest Perleberg Zoo is open all year round from 9 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. from March to October and at 4:30 p.m. from November to February. Dogs are not allowed in the zoo.
