The city of Ostfildern was created in 1975 as part of a community reform from the formerly independent communities Nellingen, Ruit, Kemnat and Scharnhausen. Other parts of the city are the one that emerged after World War II Park settlement as well as the one created after 1993 Scharnhauser Park on the former barracks of the "Nellingen Barracks" of the US Army.

Ostfildern is known nationwide for the media industry companies based here. The publisher's headquarters are in the Kemnat district Mair Dumont, he is known for the brands Falk, BaedekerMarco Polo and Lonely Planet.
