Ostrów Lednicki is a historical place in the voivodeship Greater Poland on the Gnesen Lake District. The place is known for its archaeological excavation site at the seat of the first Polish rulers. It's because of the Romance Piast way and on Wielkopolska Way of St. James.
background
The fortified manor on an island in Lake Lednica was built around 865. The first stone buildings in Poland were located here. Mieszko I made it one of his most important residences with a palace, church and fortifications around 960. Since a baptistery was also found here, it is assumed that Mieszko I was baptized here in 966. Ostrów Lednicki competed with Poses, Gniezno and Giecz about the leadership role in the early Polish state. In 1038 the Bohemians conquered and destroyed Ostrów Lednicki. Rebuilt, the place remained important until the 12th century. In the late Middle Ages it declined in importance. After the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, the place came successively to Prussia, in 1807 the Duchy of Warsaw, in 1815 again to Prussia and in 1871 to the German Empire. The first archaeological work began in 1854. After the First World War he became Polish again.
