Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia.

To go

By train

Ulan Bator is one of the main stops for the trip Moscow-Beijing.

  • For the Russia : two daily trains (one in each direction) connect the city and Irkutsk in Russia.
  • For the China : there are only two or three trains per week, and tickets can be difficult to find. The ticket for Beijing by direct train costs 60, 90 or 120 US $ depending on the category (price 2005). An alternative (easier to get the cheaper tickets) is to take the daily train to Zamaan Uud (12 h approx, 7000-12000 Torog, price 2005). From there, do like everyone else on the train, get into a jeep which first takes you to the Mongolian border post and then the Chinese one. The jeep (50 yuan, 2005 price) drops off passengers at Erlian, the first Chinese city on the border. It is then possible to take a train to Inner Mongolia or a sleeper bus to Beijing (15 h approx. 100-150 yuan, price 2005).

Let's be clear, you don't come to Mongolia for the architectural beauties of its capital, nor for its museums. Some places to visit however:

  • 3 BD's Khoroo 5 – Barbecue is popular with tourists who come to enjoy Mongolian barbecue directly imported from the United States. The "as much as you want" for is still nice.

And in summer all the Shashlik stands, beef or sheep skewer, a treat ...

Have a drink / Go out

Nightlife in Mongolia is very lively. However, it is not recommended to go out alone and it is better to go to places that are a little upscale in order to avoid trouble.

For a drink, the new favorite Mongolian bar is the Chinggis Irish pub. In the addresses frequented by expats we will note Dave's: Bar run by an Englishman with Mongolian quizzes, which as its name suggests is frequented by many Mongols.

Finally for the clubs, let us note The string - with a group of Filipino Live every evening, The flux The Music sound, with concerts of Jazz The Medusa and the Silent are the preference of the Mongols. Finally, note the opening in 2006 of the Oasis led by a French.
