Beijing Where Beijing (北京 in Chinese), literally "capital of the north", is the capital of People's Republic of China. Site of many historical monuments, including several classified by UNESCO, visiting Beijing can easily fill a week of sightseeing.

Beijing has both a historical aspect with its tourist places, and a very modern and commercial aspect. Former historic capital and world economic center, it continues to grow at breakneck speed and now has six ring roads in 2015. The city has an extraordinary architectural and cultural heritage, such as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and its marvelous imperial gardens.

Beijing is also known for its Peking duck, rice, noodles and Chinese dumplings (饺子, jiaozi). Chinese cuisine mixes sweet and savory dishes.

Understand

The original center of the city is the Forbidden City. Around it are added consecutive circles, the first being the moat of the latter. The second, under which the metro currently passes, marks the former location of the city walls, punctuated by numerous doors (-men, a name that can be found in many names of metro stops). In the north-south axis, we find the Earth Temple (ditan), the drum and bell towers, the Coal Hill, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, Tiananmen Square, Qianmen (the front door) and the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan). To the west we find the Temple of the Moon, to the east the temple of the Sun.

This diagram corresponds to the imperial city. Today, the walls no longer exist and new elements and buildings are being constructed. The government settled around Tiananmen Square and in Zhongnanhai (west of the Forbidden City). The embassy district (Sanlitun) is to the east between the second and third circles. Outside the city, dormitory housing estates with buildings of around twenty floors have sprung up. In the city, office buildings, homes or shops have also appeared. We must then take refuge in the famous hutong (small alleys) to find a little change of scenery.

The majority of streets and avenues have an east-west or north-south orientation. For the longest, they are divided into several sections with the same name and an indication (xi 西 west, dong 东 is, bei 北 north, Nope 南 south, zhong Central 中, nei 内 interior, wai 外 outside). Simplified maps of the city (with the main attractions) in English and free of charge can be found at the airport and in some hotels. Otherwise maps in English or Chinese are on sale in the street (street vendors will find you ...).

Weather

The climate in Beijing is very diverse. Note also that Beijing is a city with a very dry climate where it rains very little except in June or July / August. In Beijing, he can do −10 ° C as he can do 40 ° C depending on the months and seasons. From November to March are the coldest months, with peaks in January. It is therefore recommended to avoid this period when traveling. Favor summer which is a good season, but avoid July when the temperatures can be stifling. May, June, September and October are the best months for travelers.

Winters are cold and dry and summers are very hot and humid with heat indices that can reach or exceed 45 ° C during strong heat waves. The temperature differences between the seasons are very strong as shown by the maximum record which is 42.6 ° C and the minimum record which is −27.4 ° C. It rains mostly in summer, during which the rains fall in the form of hot rains.

To go

By plane

  • 1 Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA : PEK, ICAO: ZBAA, 北京 首都 国际 机场) Logo indicating a link to the websiteLogo indicating a wikipedia linkLogo indicating a link to the wikidata element (about 20km northeast of downtown Beijing), Logo indicating a telephone number  86 10 96158, e-mail : Logo indicating timetables permanently open. – Accessible, without assistance, to people with reduced mobilityWireless free. Main airport in Beijing (completely renovated since 2008), it serves a large number of international destinations. Internal flights are also numerous and not to be neglected when you have little time or do not want to spend 30 h In a train.

From the airport, you can either take a taxi, the shuttle bus, or the metro which arrives in the city center. In the case of the taxi, the drivers who wait right at the exit offer too high prices. It is better to leave the airport and go directly to the official taxi rank. The trip to the city center should cost between 60 and 100 yuan depending on traffic, taxi and location. From 2008 (at the latest), a metro-shuttle will connect the airport directly to the metro network in Dongzhimen.

Internal flights are reliable, maybe you just need to avoid the smallest devices (for comfort and safety).

Examples of flight frequency, price and duration, from Beijing (2004):

  • Shanghai - More than 20 flights per day, 1130 yuan, duration: h
  • Dalian - About 10 flights per day, 710 yuan, duration: a little over an hour
  • Qingdao - About 10 flights per day, 710 yuan, duration: about an hour
  • Haerbing - 8 flights per day, 960 yuan, duration: just over two hours

By train

Beijing has several train stations. The main ones are Beijing Station and West Station. Buses connect these two stations. The most central is the so-called Beijing, it is located on the circular metro line at the Beijing Zhan stop, in English Beijing Railway Station (this is the southeast corner of the line). Many night trains reach the main Chinese cities, some of which are very modern and comfortable (connection for Shanghai in 12 h), while remaining very affordable. There is also a connection between Moscow and Beijing which takes 6 days and will cost you around 200  the path.

Tickets can be purchased at train stations, most hotels and many ticket kiosks. Most tickets are on sale four days before departure, except tickets for the ultra-fast trains (destination Shanghai, Nanjing in others) which are on sale earlier (10 days before). At certain periods (national holidays) tickets are almost impossible to find if you do not do it in advance and / or through an agency.

The prices are for hard lying / hard sitting (2004 prices):

  • West station
  • For Xi'an - train Z9 (Z10 for the return), approximately 12 h, 274/150 yuan
  • To Datong - train N205, approx. h, 94/46 yuan

  • For Shanghai - train Z1, Z5, Z7, approximately 12 h, 283/499 yuan
  • For Qingdao - train T195, approximately 10 h, 215/116 yuan

By car

There are too many cars in Beijing, some areas, mainly the 3rd ring road, are often overcrowded. It is best to use public transport. The metro makes it possible to escape traffic jams in the most congested areas during rush hour, as bus lanes are not yet in place (in 2012).

By bus

There are several long-distance bus stations that connect Beijing with other Chinese cities. For longer journeys, there are sleeper buses; buses to Minyun, Chengde and a tourist bus (Badaling and Ming Tombs) depart from Dongzhimen. Tourist buses are slower (multiple stops in souvenir shops and other factories) and more expensive (price 2 or 3 times more expensive than the regular bus: ex: Badaling 12 yuan /h bus 919 and 50 yuan /h and a half tourist bus) Buses to Tianjin leave from Beijing Station .... but trains to Tianjin leave from Xizhan Huoche West Station 西 站 火车

On a boat

The nearest port is at Tianjin, at about h by bus or train.

Circulate

Depending on the budget, you can choose between the taxi and the metro. But the advantage of the latter is its speed. You can't see the streets, but you can't see the traffic jams either.

By taxi

Taxi (出租车 chūzūchē) perhaps the most convenient way. The price is 13 CNY for the support which includes the first 3 kilometers, then the price is 2 yuan per kilometer (2 元 / 公里). If the driver "forgets" to start the meter, do not forget to remind him by politely saying: "qǐng dǎ biǎo" 请 打 表, "qǐng jìchéng" (情 计 程) (or in English if you is lucky to come across an English speaker: “Run the meter, please”). Few drivers understand and read English and even less French, it is safer to obtain the address of the place where you want to go written in Chinese if you are not used to pronouncing the tones. Likewise, if the final price seems excessive or if the driver does not want to put the meter, do not hesitate to make a conspicuous note of the driver's number, visible on the front of the car, inside, on the passenger side on the card. presenting his photo and name.

By bike

Cycling around Beijing is very pleasant. Most of the roads have a cycle path and walking through the hutongs can be very culturally instructive. Some hotels rent them out. Likewise in the hutong areas there are quite a few rental points. Prices (and condition of the equipment!) Vary (count 25 yuan for a day), and you often have to leave a deposit of 200 yuan (or more). There are also several companies that offer a smartphone application to unlock the thousands of electric bikes / mini-scooters freely accessible throughout the city.

By bus

Buses (公共汽车 gōnggòngqìchē) and trolleybuses (电车, diànchē) are sometimes crowded but numerous and inexpensive. The ticket for most buses in the city costs 1 yuan (2 yuan if air conditioned). It can be bought inside the bus. There is also a monthly subscription of 40 yuan. All directions are in Chinese, oral and written, with Latin characters (pinyin) transcribed for names, but the ticket clerk, who circulates on the bus, is always ready to help you, show him where you want to go on a map and he will explain it to you. See the next section for the practical use of rechargeable magnetic cards.

By Metro

Beijing metro map

There are currently 18 metro lines (地铁 dìtiě). In the metro, directions are in Chinese and Pinyin. The stations are announced by a loudspeaker in Chinese and English. Ticket prices vary according to the distance traveled (from 4 to 10 yuan). The most practical is to buy a rechargeable card (一卡通 yī kǎ tóng), also valid on buses, sold in all metro stations and load it, for example, with 50 yuan. The credit decreases at each exit from the station.

Walk

All distances seem very long! But if you like to walk, you should not be discouraged. Indeed, to visit the slowness of the walk allows the best to observe every detail. Be careful, however, the distance between 2 metro stations in Beijing is equivalent to that of 15 metro stations in Paris ... On line 1, the average distance between 2 stations is 1 km.

To see

Most major sites (Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, ..) offer several types of tickets. The cheapest only include entry to the park. Full tickets include entry to the various pavilions or buildings (but you never enter the building, you walk past open doors or windows where you can see into the building). And all the monuments are more or less being repaired to be perfect for the Olympics. Closures in general at 16 h 30 in winter, 5 p.m. or 5.30 p.m. in summer ... sometimes later for parks (where you can go without visiting the buildings)

To learn

Tongue

Beijing is one of the ideal places to learn Chinese (Mandarin). Indeed, the language is based on the Beijing dialect, so what we learn in class is also (more or less) spoken in the street. Many schools and universities offer courses for foreigners. Likewise, it is easy to find students with whom to exchange languages.

Other

And why not take advantage of a long stay to learn calligraphy, music, Chinese opera or even a martial art? There are many possibilities.

To work

It can be difficult for a foreigner to find a job between the two extremes of being an English teacher or a manager. For most other jobs, a (good) knowledge of Chinese is required. But by researching well and using word of mouth, there are opportunities.

The most commercial areas are:

  • Guomao or China World Trade Center (国贸)
  • Dawang (大 望)
  • Eastern 3rd Ring Road (东 三环)

To buy

See as well: Negotiating in China

Beijing is an open-air market. On every corner there are shops. The opening hours are frequently h from morning to h evening for department stores and supermarkets. Bargaining is required in most cases.

  • Oriental Plaza (东方 新天地 - Dong fang xin tian di) and all Wangfujing Street (east of the Forbidden City)
  • Rue des Antiquaires (liulichang) you can find beautiful paintings, (fake) antiques, musical instruments among others
  • Silk Street (Yonganli subway exit), mostly clothes, you have to haggle. Do not hesitate to offer 1/3 of the stated price as the first price. Be careful, this street was destroyed (end of 2004). Now the market is located in a 4-5 storey building, Yonganli Metro, Northwest Exit (A).
  • Friendship store (Jianguomen Metro) which has a summary of a lot of tourist items in China, but is quite disappointing for the price and the choice.
  • Hongqiao shichang or Pearl Market (northeast of the Temple of Heaven) offers many clothes, bags, beads, souvenirs and electronic equipment on 4 floors
  • Yaxiu (雅 修 - to pronounce Ya Shiau) Market (in the district of Sanlitun), very frequented, it offers clothes, shoes and various souvenirs. Lots of choice in clothes and as always you have to haggle. There are also a few tailor-made shops.

Eat

Meal times can be surprising. The midday meal is eaten around midday and in the evening around six o'clock. A lot of restaurants therefore close around 9:00 p.m. On the other hand, in the morning we start to find breakfasts in the street as soon as the sun rises such as soy milk, wheat pancakes or other. Then, for lunch and dinner, several Beijing specialties are waiting for you around a large round table such as Chinese dumplings, several kinds of mushroom or vegetable soups for example. As Beijing is known for its flour-based specialties, there are a lot of noodles.

Cheap

Eating on the street - There are plenty of snacks available on the street for low prices. Hygiene seems rather respected. Among other things, you can find good meals for only five yuan:

  • Caramelized fruit skewers
  • Boiled corn
  • Grilled sweet potatoes
  • Roasted chestnuts (more in winter seasons)
  • Pancakes (with egg, herbs and condiments)
  • Grilled meat skewers
  • Steamed buns stuffed with meat (包子; baozi)
  • Soy milk for breakfast
  • Chinese dumplings (饺子; jiaozi)

Most stores have a supermarket in the basement, and the "food courts" are often on the top floor. Some of these "canteens" use a card system for payment. You must then buy a loaded card before you can consume. Then we can return the card and recover the rest.

Average price

  • Gost Street - Dongzhimennei dajie 东直门 内 大街: A whole series of Chinese restaurants on this road. Their particularity is that they are open all night. The restaurants seem to stand out. A good place to taste the Hot Pot. For a meal, without excess or restriction, count 20-25 yuan per person.
  • Foreign restaurants (pizzeria, sushi, ...): If after a few weeks of Chinese cuisine we dream of a different menu, Beijing offers a choice of affordable restaurants (between 50 and 100 yuan per person). Most are located in the vicinity of Sanlitun or on the central axis of the east-west metro line.
  • Yuanlü Sushi元 绿 回转 寿 四 (with a green logo). A chain of sushi bar with the conveyor belt. The quality of the fish is good and the choice is varied. These restaurants can be found in Xidan, Wangfujing, The Mall at Oriental Plaza among others.

Health
