Historically, Tianjin was the capital of the directly imperial-ruled Zhili Province (直隸 ) under its own viceroy. After the unequal treaty that was imposed on China as a result of the second opium war in 1860, foreign merchants were largely kept away from the capital, they settled here. First, France and Great Britain received concessions, i.e. extra-territorial city quarters. Up until 1895, there were those for the Tsarist Empire, Austria-Hungary, Japan and the German Empire. The architecture of the buildings erected at that time still bear witness to this era today.
The population grew from a good 4 to over 9 million between 1990 and 2010 and is a good 12.5 million in 2019. About half of them live in the city center.
