Guangxi has not known the extraordinary economic development of the neighboring province of Guangdong. However, tourists flock there eager to visit the extraordinary karst landscapes of the Li River dominated by pinnacles cloaked in vegetation.

Geographical notes

Guangxi is a predominantly mountainous province in southwestern China. It borders with Yunnan West, Guizhou North, Hunan to the northeast and Guangdong to the east and southeast. To the south it overlooks the Gulf of Tonkin for a short distance and to the south west it borders the Vietnam.

When to go

The climate of the province is subtropical with hot and rainy summers. September is a good month for a visit and even more October when the risk of running into some typhoons has completely ceased.

Urban centers

  • Nanning (南宁; Nánníng) - Capital of the province, Nanning is a modern-looking city with over 2 million inhabitants. For its visitors, Nanning offers parks and botanical gardens plus an interesting museum. Many passing tourists mostly headed to the Friendship Pass, the border crossing with the Vietnam just 200 km away.
  • Beihai (北海; Běi Hǎi) - Port on the Gulf of Tonkin, Beihai has beautiful beaches in its immediate vicinity that attract tourists especially from the Northern China.
  • Chongzuo (崇左, Chóngzuǒ) - Along the road from the capital a Pingxiang, Chongzuo can be a stop for those headed in Vietnam and is interested in seeing the nearby petrified forest (Shilin).
  • Longzhou County (龙 州, Níngmíng) - It is located in a circular valley at the intersection of the Xun and Guijiang rivers.
  • Detian - On the borderline with the Vietnam, Detian is famous for the "Ban Gioc" waterfalls with a drop of 30 meters.
  • Guilin (桂林, Guìlín) - City of 1,340,000, Guilin ranks among the major tourist destinations in the China by virtue of the extraordinary limestone peaks that guard the Li River.
  • Liuzhou (柳州; Liǔzhōu) - Industrial center on the Li River, Liuzhou enjoys less favor with tourists.
  • Longsheng (龙胜; Lóngshèng) - Thanks to its old wooden houses, Longsheng itself is a very picturesque village, also famous for its terraced rice fields.
  • Pingxiang (萍乡; Píngxiāng) - Border post on the border with Vietnam.
  • Sanjiang (三江 侗族 自治縣; Sānjiāng Dòngzú Zìzhìxiàn) - It is becoming a popular tourist destination for backpackers.
  • Weizhou - Weizhou is an island of volcanic origin with coral reefs.
  • Yangshuo (陽朔 縣; Yángshuò) - About seventy kilometers further north of Guilin, Yangshuo features the same fairytale landscapes but has a much more relaxed vibe being much smaller than Guilin.
  • Yizhou (宜州; Yízhōu) - It is located in an area known for its magnificent limestone karst formations.

The main airports are those of Guilin is Nanjing. Both are operated by China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines.
