Yunnan(Chinese: 云南 / 雲南 ) is a province in southwest of ChinaThe landscape is characterized by high mountains, here are the easternmost foothills of the Himalayas, which rise over 6000 meters high at the transition to Tibet. The climate in the valleys is subtropical, in the southernmost districts even tropical, the peaks, on the other hand, are covered by ice and snow all year round. Three of the most important rivers in Asia - the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween - flow here in deeply cut longitudinal valleys and separated by high mountain ranges along a long path parallel. The nature of this province has a particularly large biodiversity, for example there are still wild elephants. The greatest diversity of ethnic groups within China lives here, some of which still maintain their traditional way of life. The centuries-old cultural landscape of the Hani rice terrace fields on the Honghe and the karst landscape with the stone forest are particularly impressive Shilin.

background
The name Yún Nán means "south of the clouds" and is due to the location in the high mountains.
Yunnan borders the Chinese provinces Sichuan and Guizhou as well as to the autonomous regions Tibet and Guangxi and to the neighboring states Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
Of the 55 officially recognized ethnic groups in China, 36 are represented in Yunnan. In the past, these even formed their own principalities and kingdoms; today, autonomous districts and autonomous counties have been set up for them. At the last census, 62% of the population were Han Chinese, the remainder belong to various minority groups, including Yi, Bai, Hani, Dai, Zhuang and Miao.
