Urban centers
- Lanzhou (蘭州; Lánzhōu) - Capital of the province of Gansu, Lanzhou is one of the oldest cities in the China.
- Dunhuang (敦煌; Dūnhuáng) - Between caves where Buddhist hermits lived; caves belonging to the heritage ofUNESCO.
- Jiayuguan - Famous for a military fortress at the western tip of the great wall.
