There are 7 prefectures that make up the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Urban centers

  • Lhasa (拉薩; Lāsà Shì) - Capital of the homonymous prefecture and of the whole Tibet.
  • Chamdo (昌都 鎮; Chāngdū Zhèn or Qamdo) - Capital of the prefecture of Qamdo.
  • Gyantse (江孜; Jīangzǐzhèn) - The fourth largest city in Tibet and is home to a famous stupa.
  • Shigatse (日喀则; Rìkāzé or Xigatse) - Capital of the prefecture of the same name.

Other destinations

  • Mount Kailash - Sacred mountain for both Buddhists and Hindus.
  • Yarlong River National Park - The Yarlong River forms one of the deepest canyons in the world.
  • Qomolangma - Mount Everest Nature Reserve.

Entry requirements

The Tibet Autonomous Region has been part of the People's Republic of China since 1959 and was created in its present form in 1965 as an administrative unit. To enter China you need a visa in addition to a passport. To travel to Tibet, however, you also need a separate entry permit (Tibet Travel Permit), which must always be carried with you.

By plane

Lhasa Gonggar Airport is located about 50 km southeast of Lhasa in Shannan province. In addition to flights to and from Kathmandu, there are only Chinese domestic flights.

By car

Tibet can be reached from Nepal, crossing the border a Zhangmu, in about 2 hours driveThe route in the rainy summer season can be very difficult and take longer.
