Shannan Prefecture (山南 地区, Shānnán Dìqū) is a prefecture Chinese of the Tibet in the province of Southwest China.

The seat of the prefecture, Tsetang, is located in the Yarlung Valley, and is connected to Lhasa by a reasonably well-maintained asphalted road.
Geographical notes
Shannan Prefecture is located south of Lhasa, and covers an area between the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the border Bhutan. The prefecture is located at an average elevation of 3,600 meters above sea level, and with its mild climate valleys widely considered the most fertile place in Tibet.
Background
The region has played an important role in Tibetan history, and many believe it to be the cradle of Tibetan culture.
