Paranam is a town in the district of Para in Suriname, located on the left bank of the Suriname River. In 1977 the town had about 1,800 inhabitants. By Surinamese standards it has good facilities, there is a medical service and there are a number of shops.

Info

Paranam emerged as a mining village in the late 1930s, after the Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco) discovered bauxite in the area. The former plantation grounds were used to build houses. Thirty years later, an aluminum factory and an aluminum smelter settled in the village, transforming Paranam from a mining village into a factory town and becoming the largest industrial complex in Suriname.

A 70-kilometer high-voltage power line supplies the energy from the hydroelectric power station at the Brokopondo reservoir in afobaka to the aluminum smelter in Paranam.
