Haleakalā National Park covers an area of 117 km2 whose 100 km2 of desert. It takes its name from the Haleakalā volcano from which it protects the crater and the surrounding mountain. "Haleakala Is a term Hawaiian meaning "house of the Sun" in reference to the demigod Maui catching the Sun to slow down its course. The park includes several species of plants and animals that are not found anywhere else in the world. Indeed, it includes more endangered species than all the other parks of the national park system of the United States.
The park is part of the Hawaiian Islands Biosphere Reserve. It includes several telescopes due to the excellent quality of the atmosphere. Besides, the park is one of the best places in the world to observe the night sky.
The park is open year round, 24 hours per day, with the exception of closures due to severe weather conditions. It includes three visitor centers:
