Castles of the Morvan

Château de Chastellux
  • 1 Château de Chastellux. Ecb copyright.svg8€. Simple icon time.svgApril-November, Mon-Tue. Slightly northwest of Lake Crescent, Chastellux Castle dates back to the 11th century. The castle is private but still open to visitors. The castle has a beautiful park and is available for private events such as weddings, concerts or exhibitions.
  • 2 Château de Bazoches. Simple icon time.svgMarch-November. Of feudal origin, Château de Bazoches is located on a wooded hill in an old Roman station in the village of Neuvy . The castle is visible from Vezelay which is 10 km away. It was built in 1180 by Jean de Bazoches and then had several owners until in 1675 King Louis XIV gave the castle to Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Vauban was a military planner and made many changes transforming the castle into a military garrison using it for military studies and as a model for over 300 French fortresses attributable to him. The current owners, descendants of the daughter of de Vauban, have preserved many sumptuous furnishings that belonged to their famous ancestor.
  • 3 Château de Lantilly. Ecb copyright.svg€ 5,50. Simple icon time.svgJuly-August, every day except Tuesday 14: 00-18: 00. 13th century castle, also available for overnight stays and for special events such as weddings, family reunions, exhibitions and more.

Religious buildings

The park also hosts a whole series of churches and monasteries, among others, a Vezelay there is a famous (at least in the past) place of pilgrimage which is its abbey church, the 4 Basilica of Vézelay. It is an 11th century building.

At the foot of the hill, in the municipality of Saint-Père the homonymous church rises. This church is a treasure for anyone wishing to discover 13th-15th century French art because it has remained virtually intact ever since.

What to do

  • Excursions. As already mentioned above, the park is designed to educate visitors and inhabitants to respect the environment. Therefore, many guided excursions by bike, on foot or on horseback are organized to discover nature and the species that find refuge here. Not infrequently the excursions also include interactive parts in contact with the park's animals and plants.
  • * Paths to discover nature. In addition to guided excursions, there are some programmed paths that everyone is free to follow even individually, each focused on a specific naturalistic aspect and all with the aim of bringing the visitor into contact with the nature around him.
